Why is ESP getting so big? Isn’t it for the kernel and ramdisk, maybe a few old versions too? Are ramdisks now reaching in the hundreds of megabytes?

imo, who cares? I ran a laptop with a 128gb ssd for a while, much smaller than what most people would deem reasonable, and even at that size 1gb is still an insignificant fraction. Worst case scenario the empty space in the esp is some extra blocks for the drive to swap through. (Very important for SSDs)

Maybe 1GB is a bit overkill, but I can say from personal experience that, of all the partitions to find out you need to resize, this one is the most painful.
