Of course no one deserves to be murdered, but why would you travel in remote parts of northern Mexico riddled with drug cartel? It's just not smart.

I really don't think the surfing is worth it to put yourself in that kind of danger.

Travel cautions exist for a reason. They were probably looking for adventure and liked the idea of a spicy travel destination. I think we get a bit sheltered in Australia and don’t realise how real it can be in the rest of the world. Suspect we’ll never find out what happened, the cartels have the Mexican police on payroll.

They definitely found some spice, too much spice for them to handle.

I think a lot of Australians get complacent overseas, we live in a relatively safe country that we forget it’s not like that everywhere. This tragedy really makes you think twice about where to travel.

Maybe I'm naturally cautious but I always research any destination before I go somewhere.

That being said, it's becoming stabby central right here at home. We've had the bondi junction incident, the knife fight at highpoint, attempted knife attacks at Water gardens shopping center, and the knifing and murder of a surfer at coffs harbour.

I can see metal detectors being installed at shopping centers at this point.

I always thought murders at tourist destinations were pretty rare, cartels and other professional criminals don't want to attract attention because their own federal government will feel compelled to investigate and act as a matter of international diplomacy.

These dudes upset a local crim

I suspect what's happened is they've driven into cartel territory and the cartel has had a knee jerk reaction and removed what they perceived as a threat before asking any questions.

That sounds likely. The guys travelled outside the safe tourist areas.

WT, I just noticed at the bottom of the article that another surfing pair were murdered in 2016?
