The Crow (1994) (3rd June) - a lot has been said and written about the film, so I won't rehash that, but it was great to see it on the big screen as it looked and sounded great in a decently sized theatre with a solid sound system. What it got me thinking about was the upcoming film - the original is melodramatic, even deliberately Gothic and, along with the soundtrack, felt like a perfect distillation of the times. This leaves the door open for a new adaptation of the comics that tries to distill modern times and bring in advances in filmmaking as well as a bigger budget. I was also struck that, despite Brandon Lee's background and training, they didn't draw more on Hong Kong cinema but, perhaps thanks to The Matrix, there's a greater appreciation of what that can bring to films, so you could definitely punch up the action scenes (no apologies). So it has left me more hopeful about the potential of the new film as you can make something unique that stands (or falls) on it's own merits. Whether it will work remains to be seen.
