Rishi Sunak has intervened in a row between Kemi Badenoch and actor David Tennant, saying the Doctor Who star is "the problem".

Tennant suggested at the British LGBT Awards last week that he wanted a world where the equalities minister "doesn't exist any more", and said she should "shut up".

The prime minister posted on X, external that freedom of speech was the "most powerful feature of our democracy", adding: "If you’re calling for women to shut up and wishing they didn’t exist, you are the problem."

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told broadcasters he "wouldn't have engaged the way he (Tennant) did," adding that "robust" discussions should be respectful.

Trying to reframe Tennant's comments as having anything to do with the Minister's race or gender is exactly the kind of disingenuous strawmanning bald-faced bullshit we can ever expect from the fucking Tories.

Especially coming from a guy like Tennant, I've heard nothing but praise about him. Classic conservative bullshit, adapting reality to their views.

Whilst I agree, it wasn't a smart statement from Tennant. Easy words to bend.

Eeehhh... no. I get your point - and agree with the reasoning - but when you advocate that good people have to bite their tongue for fear of bad people misrepresenting them, well, there's something wrong with that.

[-] thetreesaysbark@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah, there's definitely something wrong with that. It is reality though.

The prime minister posted on X … that freedom of speech was the "most powerful feature of our democracy.”

Is Sunak really so stupid that he doesn’t realize he just refuted his own argument? And I thought US politicians were morons.

Is Sunak really so stupid

Yes.

LOL! Touché! ;)

A friend says that Sunak doesn’t actually want to be PM and he hates the Tories. That’s why he’s deliberately making numb skull moves like this.

Oh how very 1D chess of him. I'm not sure he's capable of a tactic that sophisticated, personally I'm of the opinion he's just that useless.

"Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by Sunak is a colossal fuckwit who even lost to Liz Truss."

[-] HowManyNimons@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Maybe; maybe not. But he does think his supporters are thick enough to lap it up. Which should be insulting, but they won't realise that either.

[-] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 months ago

They'll hear "freedom of speech" as they are free to hate David Tennant, LGBT and black people all at the same time. No need to pick.

[-] wren@feddit.uk 26 points 4 months ago

Freedom of speech is protection from legal restrictions, not protection from criticism from David Tennant

He really really needs to shut up. Every time the moron opens his mouth he says the wrong thing.

As a general rule of thumb whatever side of the argument Kemi Badenoch is on, is the wrong side.

[-] HowManyNimons@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

When you say "he" you mean Sunak, yeah?

[-] Guntrigger@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 months ago

Well he is the one on Kemi Badenoch's side.

rishi: wah wah david tennant

david tennant: im sorry did you say something im currently taking my family to see the mean girls play with my support non binary kids pin bc ill still be here after july 5th

[-] Emperor@feddit.uk 11 points 4 months ago

I bet Tennant is worried now as Sunak gives him both barrels and even Starmer is sticking the boot in, or whatever that half-arsed nonsense is all about.

[-] Churbleyimyam@lemm.ee 2 points 4 months ago

I don't think Sunak believes in anything, which is why his career was spawned by Boris Johnson. The whole of that cohort are the same; purely political. That's why they have failed so miserably to convince anyone.

Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
