Hi SLRPNK,

This post has two purposes. First, I wanted to introduce a new community I just created, !treehuggers@slrpnk.net. This community is for all things tree related, similar to /r/marijuanaenthusiasts which many former redditors may know.

Also, I have a few questions about community creation

  1. Since we're a small instance, other instances won't be able to see any posts from before anyone from that instance has searched for this community, correct? If so, maybe I should have waited before creating the introductory post. Is there any solution to this problem?

  2. I tried to upload a banner but it doesn't seem to appear. Any thoughts as to why that could be? Are there any limitations to size, file type, or dimensions?

  3. I thought I had a third one but I can't remember... I'll edit if it comes to me!

  1. No real solution, but you can cross-post interesting posts from your community to related communities on other instances and people might become interested and subscribe.
  2. I am currently limiting the upload file-size to 3mb, maybe that was the issue? I need to look up the banner image display size but it was something like 700 pixels wide or so.

  1. But even if they did, they still won't be able to see the intro post, right? Since it was made before anyone had joined? Or am I misunderstanding?

  2. Thanks. I think that's likely to be the problem, it's just confusing because there's no error message or other indication that it didn't work. I'll try again after sizing it down.

Ah, the intro-post, no. That will be only visible for local users or people explicitly searching for it. But you can put the important info into the side-bar for everyone to see.

Our requirement of an intro post is mainly for local users and also for technical reasons as there is no easy way to remove a mod that never posted in a community should they abandon their account. This sounds like an edge-case, but surprisingly it happened several times already on this instance.

Thanks for explaining. I tried sizing down the image but still no luck. It was a png if that matters. I’m done working on this for now but maybe I’ll try some more things later or tomorrow.

Hmm, I just uploaded a .png banner to this community without problems. Really no idea what is going wrong on your end, sorry.
