Excellent modernization and the best adaptation we'll likely ever see. Similar in terms of faithfulness as Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings original trilogy adaptations: artistic license taken and content cut out changed but the core is masterfully done.
I've loved the first book for twenty years and have reread it many times. I really enjoy the latest movie adaptation. Of all the film/TV adaptations I've seen, the recent ones are far and away the best. I agree with the other commenter who said they are similar in quality to Peter Jackson's original LOTR adaptations.
The director has said that he purposely truncated the Alia storyline because he thinks it's unfilmable. He said there's no way to get a small child who is able to effectively portray Alia, and the alternative of having a CG character would just be cartoonish and distracting.
At first I was also disappointed that he left out most of that storyline, but after I heard his reasoning, I'm totally on his side. Alia has always been one of my favorite parts of the book, and my least favorite parts of the film/TV adaptations. I think he made the right choice.
First time I watched it in theaters I hadn't read anything Dune and honestly hated it because I had no idea what was going on or who people were or why they were involved. After reading the first book and learning more about spice, the spacing guild, the witch covenant and going back in I freaking loved it. Same with my wife who isn't usually the biggest SciFi person, took her 3 watches but she loves the universe and the music.
I think the approach of not including everything but remaining faithful for what you do include is perfect. Books and movies are vastly different mediums, it’s stupid to try to make them match perfectly.
The movie was a gateway drug that not only got me into the book series, but back into reading in general
