If you made this meme from the UK, you should know... the cars don't actually have to stop for us, unless we are already out on the crossing. So if someone stops to allow us to cross, a thumbs up is a good way to acknowledge them being considerate.

A staggering number of drivers don't seem to understand this rule though, the amount of times I've had to dash back off the crossing because someone decided they can't stop for 5 seconds is way higher than it should be!

Is zebra crossing a UK thing or is it broader than that?

[–] Taiatari@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

In what sense? They are very much a thing in Germany and other parts of Europe, success in stopping cars varies though.

[–] mattclassic@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Sorry. The name itself “zebra” in the states we just call it a “crosswalk”

[–] LeadSoldier@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Yeah, most of our cross walks in the US have two lines. Basically making a path to walk within. In Europe and other countries they often have lines in the other direction to walk on, like on that Beatles album (if your old enough to get that reference).

Sincerely the the stops at stripes guy.

Crosswalks? Yes. Tigers, okay. Shirts. Yeah.

It's like a dotted stop line for cross walks, I think they're generally in the EU but have started making their way to NA.

That always terrifies me. Especially when their breath smells like beer and pretzeled bread

How can you smell their breath?

[–] Transcendant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Damn. Rest in peace.

I'm so utterly socially incompetent that I pretend I wasn't intending to cross and just keep going down my side of the street just to avoid this kind of interaction

i hate when cars stop. it's awkward; i have to acknowledge them and fake-jog and shit. just go! don't brake just to feel polite, it's faster to just keep going for everyone
