I don't think "vegan news" is a valuable service and leads to low effort content.

This is supposed to be a social media site for friends, not whatever this is. @josie@vegantheoryclub.org made by far the best post here and I really appreciate that. The rest of the content is boring and banal in my opinion.

Is there anything we can do to change this community? I'd like this to be more about us and our veganism than about vegan news or memes. Please let me know what you think

I don't have the spoons to work on this at the moment, but I changed the first line in the community sidebar to what I've interpreted this community to be for.

The vegan place to discuss things.

I really appreciate the discussions from a vegan viewpoint and prefer it much over the blogspam about plant based stuff. I'll try and work harder to remove that kind of content.

First of all, thanks for the kind words about my post

I agree that the news stuff felt a bit spammy at times, I wasn't really interested in that stuff and yet it took up a good amount of my feed (although it seems like the person who primarily was doing it has been banned for unrelated reasons now.) I've always kinda wished this instance had a more "general" community like the weekly megathreads and if other people feel that way then I'm all for it.

I was supposed to post about this. I would prefer more incidental stuff by vegans. Carnism is extremely ubiquitous and it's unpleasant to idk be chatting about raincoats and have someone suggest lanolin or beeswax. I'd prefer if it was the sort of comm where you could post incidental stuff like that.

That sounds very useful actually! I've wanted to ask some questions about vegan alternatives for things I've just been doing without but didn't really know where.

[-] NaevaTheRat@vegantheoryclub.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, not even like vegan alternatives specifically but more casual chat topic focused by post.

I like seeing people's hobbies, thoughts, ideas and so on but it's absolutely miserable always being on guard for the "oh cool, but wait! murder" whiplash when people just insert animal products or the discussion thereof into stuff.

Makes sense! There are a few general communities. I've got a terrible work/life balance so I haven't been able to contribute as much as I would like.

I don't subscribe because I find myself having knee jerk reactions to posts promoting plant based capitalism and I don't want to be unkind and get into fights on the internet.

That's not really a suggestion, more an observation.

Perhaps a vegan theory community would make sense? I hesitate to suggest it because I know I won't make the effort to contribute.

Eta: I like the weekly threads!

You're the final decision maker which is an important role to play, I need you to be a second set of eyes so that I do not act unilaterally or too rashly. Pulling back the curtain a bit I've now known you for a while and highly respect and trust you. Between the community and you I think that we can make good decisions together. The announcements thread was for me to gauge opinions but unfortunately instead of a reasonable discussion it became about US politics and manipulation.

I really did not like this. I want to know more about shitjustworks, I had previously only seen their worst comms and moderator behaviour but recently I have seen well-meaning posts and class consciousness on the instance. Instead almost every single comment was off topic, a complete waste of time.

I have made a post on clothing that hopefully will help sharing of information.

Always happy to add some inertia to things lol.

Replying here for transparency to the community: I didn't reply to the thread about defederating (except to ask for clarification from one person) because I don't have an opinion on this topic. I don't browse the wider lemmiverse so I don't interact with other instances except for a few communities I subscribe to. I'm also not really online here enough to get a sense of if some instances seem to attract people who cause issues and I don't read the mod logs.

I don't want to give the impression that I don't want to engage in discussion or am discussing community impacting things only in private.

In conclusion:

Would it make sense to make a community called "Vegan News" and have the news articles posted there?

I'd a little be happier if it wasn't just people posting a link but also explaining why it's interesting, talking about what's there, etc

[-] hamid@vegantheoryclub.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think this is a good idea but I'm not sure who would even post to it. The former most active poster is doing the same on lemmy.vg with wider reach and is federated. I don't mind just using that one either. I might not approve of their use of multiple alternate accounts but it is what it is.

The vegan place to discuss things.

Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.
