Looking to set up a basic static website. What domain registrar should I go with? Would prefer something that has more privacy obviously. Any recommendations on hosting services (cannot host on own hardware right now)?

I would need something that has reasonable security, can work with LetsEncrypt SSL certs, and preferably has either privacy respecting analytics or no analytics. Don't want google to bother me or my website visitors.

Porkbun is great for domain, haven't tried their hosting but I'd it's as good as their other stuff it should be great!

Just transferred over my domain. Pretty impressed by their security and the fact they have an account delete button right there in settings.

Gotta say, the process was supposed to take up to 5 days but my old registrar completed it in minutes. Pretty impressive! So shoutout to Namesilo for being pretty damn stellar.

Edit: Namesilo deleted my account in minutes of sending a support request, so shout out again for being so responsive!

I've had great luck with Dreamhost. The cost is fairly minimal, and they don't force any analytics service on you.

Second Dreamhost, been using them about 4 years now.

I've heard good things about Uberspace for hosting. They don't offer domain services. I use Namecheap for this but I've heard Porkbun is a good choice too.

Are the links working? Can't see them with Boost...

You fucked up the links by putting bangs in front of them. That syntax is for image embeds. If you edit the ! out of your comment it should fix them.

Remove the ! to make links, ! is only for images.

  1. njal.la
  2. 1984 Hosting
  3. Orange
  4. Incognet

All offer domains and hosting/VPS which you can use Monero to pay for.

Things to bear in mind: totally anonymous domain purchasing means you have no real control over it as it can't be proved you are the owner. If the registrar fucked you over, you lose the domain.

I'm using OVH for the domain name and they offer a free 100mb hosting and one email address with every domain name. It can be a good option to start of you are planning to have a very light static website.

Hetzner for both. For domain registration, Najalla is also good and you can pay using Monero.

Unless you're wanting to use Plex with it.

[-] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 11 months ago

I have used Plex with it, and I am using Jellyfin, now. I have had no issues.

[-] SpaceMan9000@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

Plex started banning Hetzner not too long ago, jellyfin doesn't call home in the same way and should keep working.

For static site hosting I can recommend https://www.statichost.eu/

ICD Soft

Just enable certs and the rest is automated. Analytics are private and can be enabled/disabled. Analytics are not third party. It's pretty cheap. Super easy to use. Good email services too. Can register your domain with them or transfer to them or external.
