Wondering if anyone who knows the language/region.

Can confirm the terms they use. Because age of consent when its clear the child is not able to express a chioce or old enouth to understand what they would be agreeing to.

Seems like a western interpretation. Or are the laws there really that hypocritical in their terminology.

I thought this was the onion at first, WTF, it's insane. Now wait for proposals in red states to do the same. 🀒

[-] xthexder@l.sw0.com 3 points 6 hours ago

I think The Onion has better taste than to joke about this topic.

[-] MrFunnyMoustache@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 hours ago

Pretty sure I saw a similar onion article a few years back.

[-] RoquetteQueen@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

The Onion had a whole sketch where they interviewed a pedophile.

[-] Yuki@kutsuya.dev 41 points 1 day ago

Country run by pedophiles apparently

[-] Tangentism@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 hours ago

Could be anywhere then

[-] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Apparently??

I don't think it's ever been much of a secret. Not all of them are monsters, just the ones in power and their concubines

The people voted for this though. The secular dictatorship was replaced by a democracy, and this is something Sunni and Shia parties agree on with a majority in the parliament. The old (abolished) law was introduced in 1959 with the beginning of the republican era after the end of the monarchy in 1958.

Even the opposition to it doesn't look that popular, not a lot of people:

The US put Iraq through sanctions, killed its scientists, and artists, and then invaded it and destroyed its infrastructure. The majority of Iraqis left through all that trauma had nothing but their religion institutions and tribal connections left, and through the democratic system the US imposed voted for this directly or indirectly. It sucks, but the destruction of Iraq started decades ago.

[-] PanArab@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

No, it is a parliamentary democracy.

A democracy is never a guarantee of favorable or progressive outcomes.

[-] Yuki@kutsuya.dev 2 points 12 hours ago

Nonetheless, it's still run by pedophiles. And if this is because of voting, then the people voting on this are pedophiles as well.

[-] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago

Oh great, now some US states are gonna get jealous.

[-] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

I'm so glad we brought freedom to that country πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

[-] PanArab@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

I don’t know if Netanyahu is glad now that the Iraqi resistance is attacking Israel. But he did a good job selling it to congress.

[-] adespoton@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago

Are those nine year olds also allowed to vote?

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago

We're not talking about humans. It's just girls.

/s... Obviously...

[-] wuphysics87@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 day ago

Why not just remove it entirely? 9 is oddly specific

[-] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 9 points 18 hours ago

I guess it matches Aisha's age in the Qur'an

[-] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

Because 8 is too young, you pervert!

[-] MushuChupacabra@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

What other legally binding documents can a nine year old sign?
