Completely unironically. The committee is HQ'd in Stockholm, ffs.

You'll never guess which city produces the most Pulitzer Prize winners. Hint: the committee is based out of Columbia University.

Coincidentally all the best journalists are yet again the ones that regularly show up to my dinner parties.

[–] WaterBowlSlime@lemmygrad.ml 41 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Tbh you can repost the image on a community here to make the opposite point. I actually interpreted it that way before I realized where it was posted

[–] Kuori@hexbear.net 8 points 2 years ago

I actually interpreted it that way

yea

[–] the_kid@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago

what else are they going to post on the white supremacist subreddit?

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 48 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Nobel prizes are definitely political bullshit at this point. For more clear reasons than this.

[–] Pili@lemmygrad.ml 44 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How many weddings should I bomb to get the Nobel peace prize?

[–] olgas_husband@lemmygrad.ml 27 points 2 years ago (1 children)

that depends, who are you bombing?

Member when Obama got the peace prize at the *beginning of his presidency? nuff said.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

He waged something like 3 wars at the point, and 6 or 7 overall. What would one need to do to equal to that peace achievement? Bomb the nobel comittee itself?

[–] supersolid_snake@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

If you reverse time, he ended all those wars. Did you think of that? Nobel prize please.

[–] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Holy shit. That's it. They're looking at history and going in reverse chronological order. 🤯

[–] Shinhoshi@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 2 years ago

And the Nazis un-murdered millions of Jews... no wonder they support them!

[–] StalinForTime@hexbear.net 12 points 2 years ago

Makes me think of F.W. de Klerk getting it with Nelson Mandela. Like he got it cos the libs were like 'well done mr fascist you managed to give up correctly while avoiding getting massacred in a civil war'.

[–] ComradeSalad@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 2 years ago

The peace prize is technically a separate entity and not affiliated with the actual Nobel prizes. It’s a bought prize essentially.

Fun fact, the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun was awarded this in 1920 and then gave the medallion to Goebbels in 1943

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 6 points 2 years ago

During World War II, Hamsun put his support behind the German war effort. He courted and met with high-ranking Nazi officers, including Adolf Hitler. Nazi Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels wrote a long and enthusiastic diary entry concerning a private meeting with Hamsun; according to Goebbels Hamsun's "faith in German victory is unshakable".

In 1940 Hamsun wrote that "the Germans are fighting for us". After Hitler's death, he published a short obituary in which he described him as "a warrior for mankind" and "a preacher of the gospel of justice for all nations."

After the war, he was detained by police on 14 June 1945, for treason, then committed to a hospital in Grimstad (Grimstad sykehus) "due to his advanced age", according to Einar Kringlen (a professor and medical doctor). In 1947 he was tried in Grimstad, and fined. Norway's supreme court reduced the fine from 575,000 to 325,000 Norwegian kroner.

The whereabouts of Hamsun's medal remain unknown.

Classic r/Europe moment.

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 37 points 2 years ago

Yeah this is just blatant Nazi shit.

[–] GarfieldYaoi@hexbear.net 35 points 2 years ago

frothingfash: "See! Told you I'm the master race!"

Considering that the Nobel prize originates in Sweden, this is a bit self-congratulatory, no?

[–] Tommasi@hexbear.net 33 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's a complete sham price. Even other Europeans have criticized it for being to Sweden-centric.

Along with the obvious pro-European cultural bias, how is a comittee of 18 Swedes supposed to judge texts from all languages in the world fairly? Anything you can read untranslated is gonna have a huge advantadge.

[–] juchebot88@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 2 years ago

commitee of 18 Swedes

I feel like there's an excellent set-up to a joke somewhere in there.

[–] SpaceDogs@lemmygrad.ml 30 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This is just racist. It also feels inaccurate because it implies that only those countries have produced good literature when that’s not the case by a long shot.

[–] Kuori@hexbear.net 27 points 2 years ago

jesus christ i seriously read it as a condemnation of the blatant racism on display

of course it's actually being displayed for the racism instead

[–] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 23 points 2 years ago

This is just racist.

r/europe for you

[–] ComradeSalad@lemmygrad.ml 29 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Finland won one Nobel prize in literature in 1939

Why are they included in this, other then some bizarre “Nordic supremacy” take.

[–] Shinhoshi@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 2 years ago

Unfortunately, that's exactly why they're included

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Crackers win cracker prizes shocked-pikachu

don't be racist, they've graduated to fermented canned fish now

[–] juchebot88@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 years ago

Yep. I started to suspect this in 2016 when Bob Dylan, of all people, was given the Nobel Prize for literature.
