They're still a thing in less developed parts of the world. Causes respiratory issues, so there's a push to get people proper stoves and ventilation.

What makes this specifically German? Weren't most medieval homes back then similar in style or layout?

Many moderately-prosperous freeman farmers would have been similarly homed, but it was labeled as Anglo-Saxon or Jute where I found it, and there are a few indicators of Migration Period style, particularly the clothes of the two women in the background and the pattern on the pot in the foreground.
