My Irish mind can't comprehend such long distance drives

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

Texas is 800 miles wide. I know a guy who made the drive from central Texas to San Francisco and back in just over two days. That's a 3200+ mile round trip.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Is that guy a big fan of stimulants? I did an absolutely insane road trip once that pales in comparison to that. I was driving 9-14 hours a day but what you just said sounds like 24 hour driving days.

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

He did the first leg on coffee, passed out while his friend in SF loaded the moving van, and then his friend drove the truck back part of the way and he took over when he woke up. The tuck was only ever parked long enough to load it, get food, or pee.

Thankfully I was on a separate trip or I'd have been guy #2.

that is bonkers. Sounds like a tight group of friends you have!

Shit man that's like me driving from Dublin to Athens Greece

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

It's amazing that there are lots of animals that live out there. It looks so inhospitable.

[-] Sweetpeaches69@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

One of my friends recently drove 14 hours in one shot. They took breaks, of course, but they did drive 14 hours, around 900 miles, in one day.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

I did ten hours on Saturday. It's not so bad.

[-] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Really? It sounds like you want to cry.

[-] Kitathalla@lemy.lol 2 points 3 days ago

Hell, my record is 29 hours straight, to pick up a friend from the airport. We then went on a vacation to a snow resort, but still, primary purpose was to pick him up from the airport. Good times.

I once drove coast to coast. Started in San Diego California, drove a couple hours on I-15 up to Barstow to meet I-40, and then passed this sign:

Two and a half days later we pulled into Raleigh. I slept through most of New Mexico and all of Arkansas, I was at the wheel through Arizona, half of Texas (we switched at Amarillo), and some of Tennessee into North Carolina, my cousin was at the wheel otherwise. It's the farthest single trip I've done by land.

I saw one of these that showed a location 500 miles in the other direction. It had an uturn arrow on it. They have so much money they can advertise to people not even heading in that direction.

[-] subtext@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Yeah but they got you thinking about with an ad that clearly sticks out in your mind, and maybe you’re gonna have to turn around when you’re done with your trip.

[-] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah so if you coming from Wyoming in Colorado heading towards Denver you will know the sign I am speaking of.

[-] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

That’s what an American would call a medium road trip. Short is anything under a day, about 8-12 hours. A short road trip might cover one or two states.

[-] Omgboom@lemmy.zip 29 points 4 days ago

Pfft Buckee's is so big you can probably see it at that distance.

[-] idunnololz@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

My brain is sht so my render distance is set to low.

[-] mydoomlessaccount@infosec.pub 18 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Love Buc-ee's, but it's always so goofy how far off they'll advertise a location. Then, once you pass it by, you'll see a couple more billboards telling you that it's behind you and you can still turn around and go back.

I really have to wonder what their advertising budget is sometimes.

[-] Kitathalla@lemy.lol 17 points 3 days ago

It's probably something like .00001% of their revenue, really. I'm always amazed at how a gas station has people fanboying over it, and is always full.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

No kidding. It's a mini Walmart with gas and better bathrooms. I don't need a Walmart when I fill up on gas or take a piss.

[-] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

South of the Border has been doing this long before Buc-eel’s even existed.

[-] DannyMac@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago

Yup! That one feels like it should be a record for them!

I wonder the same about the advertising budget for different mega law firms like Darryl Isaacs that has proudly on some of their billboards "We've recovered more than $2 billion for our clients." I'm like, "Yeah and then immediately reinvested into buying more billboards."

[-] Tower@lemm.ee 9 points 4 days ago

About halfway between PHX and Tucson?

[-] Impromptu2599@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

On I-10 Westbound as I remember

[-] invertedspear@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago

Yup, this is a cross post of my post from the old community. The funny (to me) part is that it’s for the wrong direction. It needs to be for the eastbound traffic.

[-] Tower@lemm.ee 4 points 3 days ago

Not sure when the last time you drove by it was, but they fixed it a little while back.

[-] invertedspear@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago

Epic win for them.

[-] Pandantic@midwest.social 3 points 3 days ago

The only Buc-ees I’ve seen a sign for was also ridiculously far away. I’ve been too Wally’s, which is also a super gas station with a cartoon mascot.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Oh goodie! Only 12 more hours!

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

They have these kinds of signs on the NJ turnpike. I think the closest one is 8 hours away in Kentucky

[-] tipicaldik@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I was just at the one off of I-10 in Alabama not too far from the FL/AL line yesterday. I splurged on 4 BBQ sammy's, a bag of beaver nuggets, a small meat & cheese tray, a bag of homemade chips, a chocolate pie cup thingee, and a cup of coffee all for the low, low price of $64 smackeroos! That place was craaazy busy...

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

My wife got a job there, didn't work a day. I have never heard of such a shitty employer in my life. Put it this way, HR spends the entire day on the phone calling applicants and begging them to come in.

[-] Kitathalla@lemy.lol 1 points 3 days ago

It's definitely place-by-place. One of my friends works there, and he shudders at the thought of having to change locations from the one he is at to one 5 miles away, saying there are horror stories. Meanwhile his job preparing sandwiches is more relaxing than a fast food joint.
