Bluesky, the Jack Dorsey-backed Twitter alternative, is getting its first third-party app for both iOS and Android users: a new app called Graysky.

Its called Greysky and its default is light mode?

[–] independantiste@sh.itjust.works 32 points 2 years ago (4 children)

My dumb ass thought this would be a weather client replacing DarkSky

[–] ArghZombies@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Shadow Weather is probably as close as you're doing to get there, I think.

[–] navi@lemmy.tespia.org 1 points 2 years ago

Merrysky but I wish they'd make an app.

I prefer Weather today as it has apple Weather Kit and it's android native, not flutter

[–] Alonely0@mastodon.social 1 points 2 years ago

@independantiste @ArghZombies I honestly don't care what it is as long as it follows material design 3 and has material you support.

[–] Hydrogen@lemdro.id 2 points 2 years ago

It technically can be if subscribing to a weather outlet...

[–] lexd0g@lemdro.id 1 points 2 years ago

i really like breezy weather, it looks great and is open source

[–] Carobu@lemmy.world 21 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This would be great if everyone wasn't waiting months for an invite

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Exactly. It's still invite only, so bluesky really feels like a bit of a non-starter.

[–] small44@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Got an invite code yesterday and i couldn't stay more than 5 minutes is as i didn't any content that interests me

[–] wagoner@infosec.pub 3 points 2 years ago

What interests you? Did you search the feeds?

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.de 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Wow do they still have a single server only?? Where is the federation?????

[–] Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Bsky.social isn't federated yet, but they do have a federation sandbox for developers. I don't think they want to put federation into the production server just yet.

IIRC there's also servers waiting for federation, I've heard there's a Russian Atproto server.

From the article 'Rather, explains Newman, Bluesky was appealing because it’s simply a better Twitter.'

Can someone explain this to me? The article does not. It all seems like garbage to me, vanilla swirl maybe instead of straight vanilla, but still tastes like crap. This release is specifically not decentralized.

Dorsey is a shitbag, always has been, why is this better?

It's still big tech

[–] IzzyData@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

At least for normal non-tech oriented people it is a Twitter without Elon Musk. Which I suppose is an improvement despite it still being Jack Dorsey.

I think it will be important to see how it is potentially monetized. If they can find some way to stay alive without going down the enshitification rabbit hole with ads and prioritized posts with paid subscriptions like Twitter then that would also be an improvement in my opinion.

[–] ArghZombies@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The protocol (AT Protocol) is what's decentralised, which is separate(ish) to BlueSky the social network.

[–] loki@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

are there any other instances using AT protocol?

[–] ArghZombies@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

A fair few, but as it's still being developed there's not many stable uses. You can check some of them out here:

https://atproto.com/community/projects

[–] IzzyData@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It appears that there will be no ads and the only monetization is for advanced features. Assuming that actually is true that is a respectable way to monetize something.

[–] Shyfer@ttrpg.network 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Thanks to centralization that can change at any moment and people can't do anything about it. We learned that from Twitter and Reddit and others.

[–] IzzyData@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

At least personally I can just leave. It's interesting that so many people get so entrenched in a service that they can't go without it.

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is their federation still vapourware?

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 years ago

vaΒ·porΒ·ware

software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed.

So, yes

[–] jackmarxist@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Well I wish it runs better than the official app because that is atrocious compared to the mastodon or even the twitter app.

[–] Hydrogen@lemdro.id 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The latest Mastodon app is great.

[–] Shyfer@ttrpg.network 1 points 2 years ago

Which Mastadon app? I've seen a couple. The official one? I also heard Tusky was good.

[–] small44@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I don't know why they made it difficult for people to create custom feeds

[–] soulfirethewolf@lemdro.id 3 points 2 years ago

My main gripe with it is that it seems to be just another React Native app just like the main app. So it doesn't really seem that much better.
