Google is the biggest threat to open web

Degoogle, deny the parasite engagement and profit.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Degoogle by getting a Google Pixel now!

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Unfortunately true ever since divestos stopped being developed. Living without a smartphone is pretty hard nowadays, but a reasonably secure and private smartphone (or anything really) is something reserved for the tech-enthusiast and you have to give money to Google.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

I miss CyanoGenMod back in the dizzay.

[–] zergtoshi@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What about GrapheneOS then?

[–] e8d79@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago

It requires you to buy a Google Pixel Phone and its too complicated for the average user. Just look at the usage guide, I completely understand anyone who wouldn't want to deal with any of that.

[–] Bali@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Well i degoogled my Google Pixel with LineageOS and microG.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There are other options but yes pixel hardware is the best choice currently

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world -3 points 2 months ago (2 children)
[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago

Everyone here is aware of the irony that the most effective way to degoogle is actually to use a pixel. Its dumb but its the reality.

[–] elbarto777@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

My next phone will be a Fairphone.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Funny thing is your sibling comment is criticising Mozilla trying to do just that :)

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I am not following. Which comment?

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 2 points 2 months ago

The one by JamonBear.

[–] JamonBear@sh.itjust.works 35 points 2 months ago (2 children)

As Mozilla moves into advertising and AI, I wonder how long their position on Manifest v3 will last...

[–] Bali@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago

Indeed. And Mozilla never clearly say how long they'll support Manifest V2. The blog reads like typical corporate wording.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 5 points 2 months ago

Where do you think most of the current income comes from?

[–] RangerJosey@lemmy.ml 19 points 2 months ago

That's a relief.

[–] mholiv@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If Mozilla drops Manifest v2 I might as well switch to a chrome variant (not brave).

I don’t want a web monoculture but it might as well be if Mozilla just copies chrome at every step.

[–] pory@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago

Reading this article makes it seem like they are doubling down on not dropping MV2, and instead maintaining both manifest versions so that they can retain maximum compatibility and options for the user.

Not supporting MV3 at all would likely hurt them a lot in the long run, and adding support for it to the existing MV2 only opens up more options for addon devs.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 2 months ago

Gave me a heart attack with Mozilla and manifest v3 in the same subject

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (4 children)

What's the way forward for Chromium-based browsers? I use Edge instead of Chrome for my work (Firefox for everything else) to keep data out of Google's clutches since we use so many Google services. Since I use uBlock Origin on both I'm concerned Edge will follow the leader and take it away.

[–] warm@kbin.earth 22 points 2 months ago

To stop using them.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 months ago

"What's the way forward for coal-fired steam trains?"

[–] Balinares@pawb.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There's an MV3 version of uBlock Origin, but it's kind of sparse. I switched to Adguard and it works just fine.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 7 points 2 months ago

Called uBlock Lite for a reason.

[–] ElectroVagrant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I've seen some occasional mentions of Cromite as an option for Chromium but not Chrome, so may be worth looking into. If open source isn't a key detail, Vivaldi may also be worth considering.

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Its nice they are keeping compatibility with version 2 but I feel its about forking time for an alternative.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've already been on Waterfox for years, personally.

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

waterfox does not use manifest?

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't understand; are you asking a question?

[–] HubertManne@moist.catsweat.com 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

yeah Im wondering then if waterfox maybe uses the original firefox add on thing.

[–] Flagstaff@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago

I haven't limited into it much, but I don't see why not!

[–] heavydust@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

including new AI functionality

Yeah, more bullshit! I use Firefox because it's the only one with uBlock Origin.

We’ll keep you updated on what’s next for extensions in Firefox

They may be lying as usual which means I have to be proactive and find a future browser. It's sad that I can't trust Firefox anymore.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 10 points 2 months ago

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy if even a post explicitly stating that everything uBO needs to function correctly will keep being supported, is interpreted as the exact opposite "because they may be lying". Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

[–] joyjoy@lemm.ee -4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Can't use Chrome, can't use Firefox. The only sane choice left is Safari. Is Apple the better alternative now?

Edit: don't be mistaken. I'm still using Firefox and have no plans to switch.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

You definitely can still use Firefox. They haven't added any AI nonsense beyond local translations and local image descriptions for accessibility. The article posted here is about how they're not removing MV2 support, so uBO still works on Firefox. Since Firefox is open source, I guarantee that the moment they try to change that there'll be a fork.

Stick with a Gecko browser to keep the market share up.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Fennec on android and librewolf and mullvad on desktop

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How likely are those to remain viable once the source (Firefox) becomes too disparate?

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Gonma cross that bridge once we get there...

But yes not very viable once mozila pulls a Donald Trump

I think there is do work being done on alternatives.

Also, firefox code base could be forked and we all will need to pay for it to be developed like adults

[–] electric_nan@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah we have all our eggs in this one basket now. Would be nice if Europe would fund an alternative or two.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -1 points 2 months ago

EU would rather fund US mega corps while buying Russian gas 🤡

[–] unknown1234_5@kbin.earth 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

why not just not introduce the changes that do nothing but break ad blockers?

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 5 points 2 months ago

That's literally what the post says is happening?
