"Genius kid"? I really dislike the unnecessary and unqualified exoticization. He's a smart kid, with access to time and resources. The sort of time and resources that any kid - Any person, really - With an interest should have access to. We'd have a lot more "geniuses" in the world if that were the case.

You are right. The video shows a dermal electroencephalogram (EEG). The article talks about the "60 Minutes" video using an array being an inspiration. Both an array or EEG are tech from the 2010's. I am enthralled by the tech/research and wish it paid better.
A pity this article does not give any link to sources...
