Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, dropped his bid for speaker on Tuesday hours after securing his divided party’s nomination, after a swift backlash from the right, including former President Donald J. Trump, left his candidacy in shambles.

Guy lasted like 4hrs as the nominee. Didn't even get a vote on the House floor before dropping out.

23 days til the government shuts down.

There is no viable republican candidate at this point. I suspect something stupid will happen now that they're effectively out of options. I sure as hell don't expect them to come up with something smart.

Seriously... What even are the possible outcomes to resolve this, at this point? 3 Republicans crossing the floor and becoming Democrats? 5 Republicans stop showing up to votes so Democrats can take over?

The GOP has lost any sense of control or cohesion. And Trump wants a shutdown, hoping he can slow roll his legal troubles long enough to get elected and pardon himself. His MAGA cronies don't feel any pressure to get a Speaker before the shutdown in 3 weeks.

I sincerely hope this is the writing on the wall that the GOP is becoming politically irrelevant, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Would love to see the schism in the GOP become official, and watch them break into two smaller parties that constantly bicker with each other instead of enacting shit policy.

Dang, didn’t even get to watch him fail a vote 😔

Wonder if Republicans are starting to realise the damage trump did to the party...

That would require at least a couple things:

  1. The ability to think about anything beyond Trump.

  2. Thinking that the brand is worth a damn. Seems like most of them, especially the Trumpist-types, only care enough to use it to get on ballots.

That's not to say those who think Trump had damaged the party don't exist; they do. But they've been cast out to the fringes, or even to the Democrats. Like Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney, the Lincoln Project people, and others.

The fact that so many of these wannabe speakers are seeking Trump's endorsement would suggest they still don't get it.

Click here to see the summary3 House Republican, dropped his bid for speaker on Tuesday hours after securing his divided party’s nomination, after a swift backlash from the right, including former President Donald J. Trump, left his candidacy in shambles.

Mr. Emmer began Tuesday with a scant victory, winning an internal party nominating contest by a vote of 117 to 97 over a right-wing rival, Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana.

And as he met with holdouts to try to win them over, the former president issued a scathing statement on social media expressing vehement opposition to Mr. Emmer, calling him a “Globalist RINO” — short for “Republican in name only” — whose elevation would be a “tragic mistake.”

: Dozens of members have abandoned the old norms of respecting the winner of the party’s internal elections, and instead are acting according to their individual preferences, ideologies and allegiances.

Others railed against Mr. Emmer’s vote in favor of a stopgap spending bill put forward by Mr. McCarthy, the speaker at the time, to avert a government shutdown.

A former college ice hockey player and coach, Mr. Emmer, 62, currently holds the job of “whip,” the chief vote counter for the party.
