Great race! Amazing drive from Albon. Yuki should have been up there too but typical VCARB strategy screwed him.

Antonelli finishing 4th on debut just like Hamilton is forboding.

[โ€“] pstils@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago

Well deserved win for Norris. Feels like there was every opportunity for events to screw the fastest driver in the fastest car, despite the team making the right calls at the right time.

Often in f1 this kind of race ends up with a surprise winner. Itโ€™s part of what makes the sport so great, but also so frustrating at times. With Max having been so dominant over the past few seasons itโ€™s just nice to see McLaren not dropping the ball.

I feel bad for Alonso. The track had an absurd amount of gravel sprayed over it and he clipped it slightly and lost it entirely.

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He could have had a really good result too, judging by where Stroll and Kimi ended up. P5 might have been on for Fernando. The car might not be as bad as I had feared (still not great).I was watching onboards and lap times and Alonso was gapping Stroll and keeping Antonelli behind him just before the crash.

To be fair, ~~stroll was on wets on a drying track so that was not such a big achievement~~. Yes he would have finished ahead of stroll, but I don't think he would have finished ahead of kimi or albon

I watching pretty closely too. I took this photo as he got out out of the wreck and walked off the track.

I don't think this was shown on TV, but there was a cleanup crew sweeping the gravel off turn 6 while the safety car was out. It took them two or three laps to do it.

I was standing here when he hit the gravel. It made a distinct noise before he spun.

Stroll was never on full wets as far as I know. They were both on old Inters at the time. It's true he was probably using his tires more than Kimi to hold him off, but we don't know for sure. Kimi himself seemed to be falling off in pace and struggling to catch up to Alonso so I think he was burning through his tyres as well. Of course the safety car that enabled Stroll to get 6th was caused by Alonso so I should revise my previous statement anyway since he's not getting there without a SC.

[โ€“] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah I just checked. Stroll was on the wets during the first formation lap (the one where Hadjar crashed). They changed it before the next start and stroll was never shown again so I thought he was still on wets. My bad

McLaren fucked Piastriโ€™s race when they asked him not to overtake Norris.

[โ€“] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think so. They only asked him not to overtake him for a short period of time, where they were lapping backmarkers and the track conditions were bad. From a team perspective it makes no difference which cars are first and second, just that they actually bring the cars home in that order.

[โ€“] alkbch@lemmy.ml -2 points 4 hours ago

That short amount of time has devastating effects on the mental of the faster driver stuck behind the slower one.

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 40 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

What. A. Race.

Norris did extremely well. Mega unfortunate for Piastri.

Huge haul of points for Williams.

Sauber scores more points today than they did all of last year ๐Ÿ’€

Disasterclass for Ferrari.

Fantastic debut for Antonelli.

[โ€“] Sentau@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago

Also VCARB screwing tsunoda as usual after a brilliant weekend upto that point

[โ€“] GoodEye8@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I think the team orders screwed Piastri. He was clearly in the zone and he was quicker than Norris and he definitely wanted to see if he could get past Norris. When the orders came in his flow was ruined and he started to make mistakes. I get what McLaren were going for, but I think it was unfair towards Piastri. If there's ever a time to let drivers race it out in such conditions it would be the first race of the season, and McLaren didn't even let them do that.

[โ€“] pstils@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think Piastri was faster because Norris was nursing his tires, and Piastri made mistakes because he was pushing it too hard. I think Norris had him beat - not by much - but had him beat by margins throughout the weekend and was a very deserving winner.

[โ€“] Remorhaz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yep, Piastri would get to a gap of 1.1, and then Lando would open up again, he was coasting unless he was protecting from DRS

[โ€“] hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Williams already have double digit points. Let's go!

Classic Ferrari.

Hamilton's engineer has the worst job in F1.

Also I like how Piastri didn't give up. Great driver.

Kick Sauber outscored their 2024 season in a single race ๐Ÿ’š

"DRS Avai..."

"yeah I know, leave me alone."

I should have had Hamilton's comms on my screen this race.

[โ€“] CMLVI@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Happy for Norris, amped for Williams and Albon. Sucks Sainz went out early. Ferrari doing Ferrari shit still, Yuki got screwed a bit. I'm sure conditions jumbled it a bit, but Verstappen not looking as far off the pace as people were assuming, in a worse car, in hard conditions. I'm sure Norris was strategizing and coasting a bit, cause those McLarens held up those initial intermediates well and it seemed other cars were burning through them.

The full Ferrari experienceโ„ข๏ธ

[โ€“] 1luv8008135@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

Sainz crashing out behind the safety car. Piastri getting the traditional, โ€˜Aussie driver at AusGPโ€™ experience. Iโ€™m going to need till Tuesday before I can start talking to people again.

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Just finished watching, thankfully managed to avoid spoilers. What a start to the season! Pace of McLaren is a bit ominous in terms of competitive outlook for the season however. But I hope they let them race eachother so we get a title fight at least.

Super happy for Albon, Williams looked genuinely fast and he drove well in tricky conditions. Ferrari looked nowhere and actually slower than Williams, but it's a weird circuit and difficult conditions so it might not be quite as bad as it looks. Hamilton looked significantly worse than Leclerc, but I guess we're still in the "new team grace period"?

Tough day for the rookies as you would expect with the weather, but I was extremely impressed by Antonelli. Watched his onboard all race and he had great pace even in the rain and absolutely no fear.

Gutted for Yuki though who got the usual VCARB screw job after a blinder of a weekend performance wise. It's enough to make you cry.

Worst race directing for a Grand Prix yetโ€ฆ I felt so confused half the time because they NEVER SHOWED WHAT HAPPENED

[โ€“] Merlin@lemm.ee 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

And for most of the race the leaderboard was not showing the time distance between the drivers

[โ€“] _ed@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

most of the race the leaderboard was not showing the

Time to repost SlowlyDev's F1 Live timing app. It was bloody frustrating not having the time breakdowns for sure.

[โ€“] lazycouchpotato@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Nice. Thanks for sharing!

[โ€“] Merlin@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Wow. That looks neat

[โ€“] Munkisquisher@lemmy.nz 5 points 2 days ago

They broke it for 1/3 of the race. Before they switched it off I realised the numbers weren't updating for over a lap. They turned on the driver tracker map to try and compensate, and kept flashing up gap between driver headlines at the bottom of the screen

[โ€“] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I miss the old live timings app they had.

Thoroughly enjoyable grand prix. Deserved winner in Norris who had pole, fastest lap and P1. Great drive from Max as well and also Albon and Hulkenberg. This season is going to be a doozy!

[โ€“] Intergalactic@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

My beloved Ferrari, with their usual expertise.

[โ€“] Danitos@reddthat.com 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I found the race to be mostly boring, and then BAM, in half a lap it became incredibly interesting. So glad I stayed up to watch the race.

[โ€“] EddoWagt@feddit.nl 5 points 2 days ago

I had to wake up at 5 in the morning for it :( Luckily the race didn't get delayed too much

[โ€“] user1919@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

fun race overall

[โ€“] blackn1ght@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

Great opening race! Was very nervous for Norris but he did a great job, mature drive. Feel bad for Piastri. Great result for Williams, more of that from them please!
