Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So how’s it going?

First actual frost at our place overnight. Was hoping to get away with none this winter. My youngish paw paw tree did not like it, probably going to lose its leaves now. Some how my outdoor sweet pepper plant still looks ok.

Stay warm everyone!

Another shooting! Was it always like this or are we just getting more coverage now?

In other news, I replaced my PC speakers with a UE Boom 3 I got off Trademe. Desk is much clearer without the speakers, there's no cables, got rid of the sub under my desk, and was able to remove a whole 4 plug with better management. I highly recommend this option if you get minimalist urges like me. It's so clean

And there's a new ADV Podcasts episode out! They are showing footage of the flooding in Beijing. Hooooly crap.

On speaker recommendations, I'm a huge fan of my Edifier R1700BT speakers. They're a fantastic budget option, and can go for under $200 on sale. They have more cabling than a UE boom, but you could connect them to your PC via Bluetooth, and they sound gorgeous.

Those do look nice...

Wouldn't fit on my desk though unfortunately.

[-] angrylizard@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

That's an amazing idea. Thanks, going to buy one today!

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

You mean a gun, a UE Boom 3 or a flood in Beijing?

There's only one right answer to this question.

[-] angrylizard@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

On the spot here.... Can't decide! Seriously the UE boom is inspired.

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

I've been using it all day and it's been great. Well, it's been exactly the same as my other speakers. No idea about battery life because it's second hand, but when it eventually can't hold charge it can just stay plugged in to the usb dock.

It feels like its been like this for the last year or two. There was a few months where my area was getting at least a shooting per week

Yes and no. Overall the murder rate is going down (barring 15 March 2019): https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/NZL/new-zealand/crime-rate-statistics

There's more recent years in this PDF: https://www.police.govt.nz/sites/default/files/publications/historic-new-zealand-murder-offences-1926-2021.pdf

So we get 10-11 murders per 1 million population. This is half what it was in the 90s.

However, there has been a recent violent crime increase. This is also not unexpected, as Labour has a policy of reducing the prison population. Putting less people in prison has longer term societal benefits but you can imagine it would lead to shorter term increases in violent crime, which does appear to be the case: https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/the-whole-truth/130965380/the-whole-truth-has-violent-crime-gone-up-under-labour

It does suggest rehabilitation isn't working though (assuming any increase is actually mostly from people who were previously convicted).

That said, crime stats seem to be so fraught, it's really hard to tell what's going on with any degree of precision

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

There's a lot to be said for having something in place to prevent the need for prison and rehab in the first place.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Not necessarily. If you have a 50% recidivism rate but hold less people in prison, crime rates will go up even if the rate doesn't change, simply because there are more people out of prison. Even if the recidivism rate goes down you may have more crime. But if over time the lower recidivism rate means less people go back to prison, over time you should see overall crime drop. This is probably a generatonal time period though. Short term higher crime rates for longer term gain.

That link you posted shows a giant spike and it being the highest its been since the 90s

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

Yes, that giant spike is in 2019 with the March 15 terror attacks. It goes back to the normal line in 2020 as shown in the PDF.

Friends, I've discovered today is International Beer Day. It's on Wikipedia, so it's legit.

According to Wikipedia we can observe this noble day with such time honoured events as trivia nights, beer flights, and binge drinking.

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 5 points 1 year ago

I've already had 5 so I guess the spirit was inside me all along

[-] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 year ago

I stopped drinking a while ago, but I give you permission to drink another 5 on my behalf

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

It is a sacrifice I am willing to make.

[-] eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

You truly are a hero

[-] Hades@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

Thanks for your service 🫡

[-] sortofblue@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 year ago

I knew I should have checked here before grabbing a bottle of wine on the way home, haha. I've decided my beer of choice is 0% Asahi but tonight I've got an Aussie pinot gris.

Happy Friday!

Just joined Lemmy as sync has been released, so glad to see NZ is active here!

If anyone is wondering, I tried rolling back the website frontend (on a test server) to see if it would solve the issue with "Show context". It didn't solve the issue, it seems to be a change on the server side that's conflicting with the front end, as apps don't seem to be affected.

I recognise not everyone is technical so I'll try to explain some key concepts.

The website that you access and the server that works out what content to show are two separate things. When you access the website, it sends requests to the server for what content to show.

When you use an app, the app sends requests directly to the server similar to how the website does. Therefore issues on the website don't necessarily show up in apps, because the app doesn't go through the website.

I'm happy to explain other parts if anyone wants me to.

[-] luthis@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Ohhh I was wondering why the context function didn't seem to be working.

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, it's an issue with the latest Lemmy version. We had a bit of a chat about it in the Lemmy.nz Matrix chat room. Seems to be that the database optimisations have caused comments to come in a different order than the website side is expecting, so I guess it fails to contruct them on the page.

Unfortunately rolling back the server probably isn't possible, because of the database changes. At the very least it's risky. Might be better to use an app, or another frontend like old.lemmy.nz or voyager.lemmy.nz as hopefully they aren't affected.

I'm closely monitoring the bug report waiting for the fix, but it seems at the moment every release it's two steps forward, one step back.

[-] surfbum@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Link to the chat room ? I’d love to be a fly in the wall

[-] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 year ago

Here's the post about it. It's linked on the home page (both at the top and in the side bar, but not in the community side bar so you won't see it from this post).
