Just here to check out Technology community and others that peak my interest.

Welcome Stu!

There are a few technology communities, !technology@lemmy.world being the largest. If you have other more specific technology communities, there is !linux@programming.dev , !android@lemdro.id , !selfhosted@lemmy.world, !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Feel free if you have any questions

If you check !main@lemmy.ca there's a nice pinned new users thread there. Welcome!

Anyone else feeling like we're edging towards critical mass these days?

[โ€“] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Critical mass is still a ways away I think. I have noticed a stream of new accounts recently, some of which seem to be the type of dedicated users who post a lot, which has created a marked uptick in activity.

But critical mass - which I define as active niche non-tech communities thriving without having to rely on a single user doing 99% of the posting - is not achieved yet. I think probably at least the 100k MAU barrier has to be breached for that, if not more.

Agreed. General sports community like !Football@lemm.ee are still very quiet. Once they get busier, that will be a good sign.

I feel like the move off of .world probably lost that community some momentum, but that might not be true I don't know. It's been a bit more active recently though than for a long time, so that's a good sign.

It was quiet on world too, and the pinned post there still redirects to the new one.

I was also posting there more, maybe that has an influence as well

I was just looking at the subscriber count difference a few days ago and noticed the stark difference. But most of those .world subscribers could be dead accounts.

I am noticing a marked increase in profiles I've checked being made in 2025, when in late 2024 it was a lot more of "2 years ago" folks. I've no idea what critical mass is but Reddit is slowly but steadily declining which is great news for us.

Welcome! I recommend taking a look at this list for some general good, active communities and also subscribing to !trendingcommunities@feddit.nl and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca to find more.

Hey Stu, welcome to lemmy. FYI the word is 'pique', not 'peak'.

I see you're trying to recreate the reddit experience โค๏ธ
