A Hong Kong court dismissed a gun charge Monday against a Washington state senator who had been arrested after he carried a gun into the Chinese territory in what he called an “honest mistake.”

Republican Jeff Wilson self-declared that he was carrying the gun at the airport Oct. 21, has a clear criminal record in Hong Kong and made his admission in an open manner, the prosecution said at the court hearing.

Principal Magistrate Don So approved the arrangement for a bind-over order rather than a plea to possessing an unlicensed firearm, saying he was inclined to believe Wilson was innocent.

The bind-over order requires Wilson to keep the peace and avoid committing further firearms offenses for two years. The magistrate said Wilson would be fined 2,000 Hong Kong dollars ($255) for breaching the order if he doesn’t comply.

You make the same "honest mistake" and you get locked up for five to ten.

Honestly I find him incredibly lucky because recently Ive seen US diplomats trying to actually have talks with China and under a different administration (cough cough this guys own party) this guy could become a bargining chip or PR example of US disrespect. HK could have made this a lot harder for him.

Makes a person wonder what deal was struck behind the scenes to make this go quietly away.

He discovered the weapon during the flight between San Francisco and Hong Kong, it said.

So he made it passed TSA with an entire firearm.

Not just that, but he doesn't keep track of where his firearms are.

For an honest mistake, so much had to go wrong.

The TSA has a roughly 80% failure rate on detecting weapons. Some tests rate it up to 95%. There's a reason it's called security theater.

They couldn't find this man's gun, but they confiscated my Leatherman when my bags got bumped from checked to carry-on.

Made my wife dump out hot sauce she forgot to put in her checked luggage.

We need to abolish the TSA in its current form. Billions spent inconveniencing travelers with unreasonable and at times invasive searches.

You know what we haven't done? Caught a terrorist.

He's a certified fucking moron. Feels the need to carry, can't carry responsibly, advocates and votes for other irresponsible assholes to carry.

think this is hyperbole? https://jalopnik.com/youve-got-to-stop-keeping-your-gun-in-your-car-1850929717#:~:text=Thieves%20will%20sweep%20neighborhoods%2C%20parking,t%20seem%20to%20be%20stopping.

It's much worse than you guess.

TSA is a fake security service that serves absolutely no purpose. It is security theater performed by arrogant police academy rejects.

Erasing the TSA would save us 10 billion a year. Erase the worthless TSA already, for fuck's sake.

Oh it serves a purpose. Sucking billions of dollars away from programs that actually do some good.
