Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

Not very convincing. Tariffs mainly hurt yourself, and if you exclude pretty much the only things the EU is actually importing from the US like the author suggest they are also meaningless.

Anti-coercive efforts that hit US big tech services I can get behind, because regardless of the outcome it will be good to reduce reliance on those.

Last paragraph sums it up for those looking for a quick snack:

"The claim that a trade war with the US is best avoided is valid. But Trump has already started the war. The real question then is whether Europe should surrender without a fight, hoping for the unlikely benevolence of the victor (and validating its disdain for a weak and divided EU), or whether it should fight back, while remaining open to negotiation, in order to truly seek a solution to the trade war. Bending the knee to the tyrant will most likely encourage the tyrant to ask for more. Therefore, if the aim is to end an economically devastating conflict as quickly as possible, the EU must risk responding in kind to US tariff aggression."

If there is no retaliation, then there is no incentive to stop the tariffs on the USA side. Even if that wasn’t trump, it’s logical.

nah, as a USian, you fucking slap those tariffs right back onto the US.

You do NOT let my stupid ass president get away with this dumb lame ass bullying.

Believe me, the bulk of the U.S. population supports you in throwing the middle finger to Trump, and to making consequences happen for doing dumb shit.

There is no other option other than retaliating, otherwise this will simply continue until you do retaliate. This is how loser bullies work.

Also, can y'all please put a MASSIVE tariff on couches to piss of JD Vance?

AGREED. We need to be moving further away from tribalism and isolationism, not back toward it. This path we're on is the complete opposite of the Star Trek-esque utopia I always envisioned.

For me, that's hard to believe after the majority of US citizen voted for this clown, even though they knew exactly what they would get.

Voter turnout was roughly 64.1% and out of those, 49.8% voted for Trump, bringing the total to about 32% of eligible voters. While one can absolutely make the argument that abstaining from voting implicitly supported Trump as Republicans typically fare better in low-turnout elections, it's not exactly factual to say that the majority of citizens voted for him

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It really isn't accurate at all to say the majority voted for Trump, I am not trying to defend the choice not to vote, but a bunch of not voting is not the same as a bunch of people voting, it is a very simple self evident fact if what you are concerned with is identifying what most people want.

If the overwhelming majority of USians voted for Trump, we would be in a even more terrifying place than we are.

If a third of your population can't be bothered to vote against him, I see them in support of him.

Voting is a privilege but also a duty

[–] Pelicanen@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This was literally my second sentence.

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I misread that as you trying to sy it doesn't mean that

Honestly though, I feel this is bound to happen with at least some of the countries
