That's not Marathon. What a shitty end to a once-proud IP.

A (rumored) $40 live service battle-royale.. outlook bad for this game.

It's not a battle-royale. It's an extraction shooter which IMO makes the outlook even worse because extraction shooters are probably the most hardcore subgenre of shooters you could have. The game is either going to pivot hard within months after launch or it's going to flop.

bungie sadly joined the brain-drain/cash-cow phase. pretty evident how the core is very similar to destiny, lots of copy paste. bare bones product as in another live service we can all imagine it will work like (ie no campaign).

It really is a shame to the original story rich IP of the golden age bungie talent.

Sad but the beauty is theres alot of great upcoming game studios to look out for. mostly indie(too many to list, gotta watch upcoming indie highlight reports - honorable mention would be a project like balatro), but even double-A like embark studios with arc raiders upcoming (ex dice devs - same fate)

Online only, no bots, probably mtx and paid DLCs. No thanks.

Anyone remember when Marathon was a story-driven shooter stuffed to the gills with interesting lore? If you do, you're doing better than Bungie.

What makes you think this will be lacking in the lore department? Lore is what Bungie does.

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well, you do you trying to extract the lore from an extraction shooter. Sounds like a mess to me.

Realistically, the gameplay loop doesn't look too different from something like Helldivers 2; go into a mission, fight enemies on the way to an objective, complete the objective, return back to your escape point. Really, the only difference is inventory persistence, but Arrowhead manages to stuff a lot of story into that.

I don't think it's the most conducive medium for storytelling, but it's far from impossible, if you ask me.

I hate how it looks, apex was popular so just make that but extraction shooter? Fucking shameful.

I'm going to play infinity tonight just to feel better.

I really like the aesthetic, but the gameplay looks pretty much identical to every other extraction shooter I've seen. I feel like that's such a niche genre that already has a lot of big contenders, so it just seems like a weird move for Bungie to invest so heavily into this genre without offering anything substantially different.

Haha, crap, that looks pretty bad

What does it have to do with the marathon IP? Like im genuinely curious if this has some kind of link to the original games or if its just bungie planning a tax write off by tanking an IP they own the rights to.

It seems like the only reason theyd slap an old IP onto something this generic looking is because they need a cash grab and expect the game to fail.
