Lopez-Gomez was reportedly released Thursday evening after protestors gathered outside of the Leon County jail, where he was being held.

In good news, they were released after public backlash and protest. Protesting can work, boycotts can work, and so on. Don't let anyone think we can't act because we the people can

They want to take our rights, but we are not powerless to stop them. Fight back!

Pressure certainly helps, but let's not kid ourselves. He was released because he's a whole ass US Citizen with no asterisks near his name. The admin doesn't want that smoke - yet.

everything is both a test run and the real deal. it's a classic russian strategy to both do the torture and to do so much different torture that no one is powerful enough to stop all of it

Yes! If they didn’t work, we wouldn’t have such coordinated negative messaging about how they DON’T work and are a waste of time. If conservatives didn’t think boycotts and protests were effective they wouldn’t be working so hard to make them illegal.

While it is important to report these stories, and while I understand everything moves fast, this is old news.

He was released today. That's the news of this story now.

I hope he sues and gets a fat check from it.

The article is not clear. Was he held by ICE or held at the request of ICE (like it says).

So it sounds like ICE was using state resources and officers to hold him but he was freed because of a state judges rule?

This doesn't sound so much like ICE/feds giving up. But them testing which state resources and judges will play ball and who needs to be "removed".

“Lopez-Gomez was charged under a recently passed state law that made it a state crime to illegally enter the state.”

So how does tourism work now? Is there a state office for immigration?

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 4 days ago

[defined] illegal entry as occurring when an “unauthorized” alien of at least 18 years of age “knowingly enters or attempts to enter” the state after eluding immigration inspection. The crime is designated as a first-degree misdemeanor subjecting the alien to a mandatory minimum prison sentence of nine months upon conviction.

Basically tourist are fine.

But let's not kid ourselves here. Florida was always going to use this law for the lower half of the Family Guy skin chart.

[–] LeninOnAPrayer@lemm.ee 7 points 4 days ago

Nah. Probably just some vague law about it being illegal to enter that state as a "terrorist".

Which is just a word for a brown person or a white person with a brown enough sounding name like "Lopez" or "Muhammad"

How bout we stop paying taxes and use it to fund our own police force

[–] all4theTomatoes@lemm.ee 7 points 4 days ago

Everyone should organize. Countywide. Start small but committed.

[–] Melatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This was intended as their test of birthright citizenship, which they have criticized since before the election.

Too much attention on this one, but they'll find the right person and do it, because they want it to go to the Supreme Court.

[–] yeahiknow3 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The supreme kangaroo court of the United States. SKCOTUS.

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I prefer the backronym SCROTUS but I'm not sure what the R would stand for.
