Niche subs.

We just don't have the users here for it yet. Some of the niche subs exist on Lemmy, there's just no activity.

That's about it though. I don't miss Reddit discourse. Don't miss 99% of my comments never being seen or responded to. I don't miss Reddit censorship. There is some censorship here, but it's entirely dependent on the sub and it's pretty minimal. Crybaby mods are much less of an issue here.

Do you think it's strictly a lack of users, or that the current userbase may have a rather narrow set of interests?

Mostly the slightly more niche entertainment based communities I think. Like how I was doing it on Reddit towards the end there was if I watched a movie that I loved or was particularly enjoying a series, I would search it up on Reddit and join. And a lot of them were really cool or fun spaces to hang around in. So like for example, I never really spent too much time in generic TV subs but my hangout spots were the specific subs for iZombie, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, Xena (I honestly especially miss the Xena subreddit). And that probably would've changed and evolved over the years.

Also loved doing stuff like having a marathon watch of all the Hellraiser movies, then making a review post in the subreddit. I did that for a couple of movie series: Hellraiser, the Crow, Starship Troopers. And a lot of those communities were pretty fun to keep around and lurk in as well.

Then also games. Like I'm playing Terraria, so I'd also look for the Terraria subreddit and subscribe.

And apart from that. Skincare and hair care style communities. 'Fashion' communities for alt / goth styles or even just for people to show off the cool shit they thrifted.

Honestly I think my real answer is that it just needs more niche stuff in general. Like, even as far as self care style subs go, I wasn't limited to two big ones, there was even a subreddit for people with my specific eye shape (and tips pertaining to that) lol.

I realise that will all only come with time and a few more users though. And I've realised that we don't even need that many more users. Already here on Lemmy, there's a handful of users that partly carry this place on their backs by regularly providing content for us riff raff to interact with. We just need a few more of those users to provide all the lurkers and doom scrollers things to interact with.

Hey mate! There's our women only sub !WomensStuff@lazysoci.al for fashion, hair etc and goth sub !gpral@hilariouschaos.com for all things alt

[–] Zero22xx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Definitely going to be lurking !WomensStuff@lazysoci.al from here on out and hoping that it attracts even more people here. That alt sub is unfortunately inaccessible to large parts of the Fediverse because a lot of instances have de-federated from that one, mine included. Can't even follow that link without an error message.

So unless I change to an instance with less moderation, I'm gonna have to wait for another one to pop up somewhere in Lemmy. I have been considering exploring instances again though and maybe signing up elsewhere.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 2 points 20 hours ago

Very happy to have you joining, lurk away 😀

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 3 points 21 hours ago

I would recommend another instance than hilariouschaos for that community https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/42658455?scrollToComments=true

Minorities. I feel like most people here are americans/europeans, which kind of makes a bubble.

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Indeed, but it's already an improvement over the US defaultism on Reddit

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Heh, there's already tons of US defaultism here anyway ;) Anyways, i don't really think EU-defaultism is too much better.

It also makes me very uncomfortable seeing people on lemmy support countries and politicians that are literally funding multiple genocides of arabs, and exploiting the third world for profit. I always loved r/arabs and other minority communities as a balance of sanity for that.

Lemmy's supposed to be an international community, but i feel very second-class here :p

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

As of this moment, is there any Arab community that people can join? I remember the existing one having debatable moderation

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I mod !arabs@lemmy.dbzer0.com. Though ironically, when i make posts in arabic there i get downvoted 🥲 There's more westerners (thinking that it's a community for news, not for arabs) than actual arabs there.

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

First time I hear about it, have you ever promoted it on !communitypromo@lemmy.ca ? 😄

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Actually nope, i completely forgot lol. We actually have 58 members already, somehow? All i do is post news articles for now :^)

[–] Blaze@sopuli.xyz 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Promoting it would probably help, there are probably other Arabs around, they just don't know about the community

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

There are other arabs, i do get to talk to them sometimes (i recognize them all, i don't know if all of them recognize me tho lol)

I love talking to them, i just wish there were more to talk to.

I'll promote it later :-)

Cool to see!

Quantity of useful answers to tech questions that Google finds. Give it time I guess :)

[–] Irelephant@lemm.ee 2 points 13 hours ago

I've had a few lemmy links appear in google.

[–] power@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago

being able to google a problem and find a discussion on said problem with genuine feedback & answers.

I miss all the silly subs. I had a lot of subs that just had content that made me laugh or feel good. Lemmy has a lot more actual news which is always bad and depressing :/

Edit: Thanks for the recommendations guys!

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 2 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

Idk about those silly subs but I've been digging !dullsters@dullsters.net

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I miss the depth of niches

Me too. The depth of niches will grow proportionally with the size of the userbase, and as Reddit continues to ensh*ttify, the Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed userbase will increase.
