I mean if I had the resources to I would be long gone, jumping ship to an entirely new country is incredibly expensive and poses a lot of challenges if you don't have an in. If you're just some basic bitch civilian with no super special in-demand skills the fuck are you supposed to do.

with no super special in-demand skills the fuck are you supposed to do.

Quite a few countries are fine if your income is a WFH job even if the company is US based. As long as that income is at or above whatever level they set you're generally fine on that front even if you're not like a researcher or something.

So, if you can snag a stable WFH job with decent enough income for your target country, that is also cool with you being in another country (it's more common than you might think) that could be your way out

I am but a pathetic laborer, "work from home" is a level of cushy shat I can only dream of with tears in my eyes.

We still have work visas friend

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh really? I wouldn't have guessed that. Do you have some examples?

[–] SacralPlexus@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Search for “digital nomad visa” plus the name of whatever country you might be interested in living in.

But you're still paying US taxes. A digital nomad visa isn't really leaving the US in the meaningful way the other poster was suggesting.

True, but it looks like you can get six months in many countries in which to keep your US job and look for local work (towards a residency).

There is a paywall.

Those that have read the article, what countries are the researchers moving to?

Everyone, where would you move to?

[–] blakenong 9 points 2 months ago

lol, your question should be, “what country will accept your application”

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

I'm moving to Sweden. They have been investing a lot into game dev work which is what I want to be doing so I'm going to get my degree there

They don’t just take anyone. You have to qualify. And 90% of Americans DONT. So, have a backup plan.

Do you know how hard it is to get residency in Canada?

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Of you have $2m Quebec will sell you one.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago

Best I can do is tree fiddy.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is it sell, or let them hold?

I ask as some places will let a person buy a $500K house and be allowed in. (One can sell the house when they leave.)

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think you need 2m in the bank and loan them 1m for two years.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

So $3 million?

There are cheaper countries...

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Sorry, no bargains.

[–] MisanthropiCynic@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Nah… anywhere it regularly snows is not fit for human habitation

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What an odd take. Humans are adapted to snow, and the cold kills mosquitoes. Humans should only live where it snows.

[–] MisanthropiCynic@lemm.ee 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

We are not adapted to snow. If you cannot stand in a climate completely naked and not die from lack of temperature regulation, you are not adapted to it.

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago

Of course we are. We adapted by making and wearing clothing. We build shelters, fires, and furnaces.

I updated the post with an archive link, but it's a video article, so the good parts aren't in text

But, funnily enough, I was able to click the Play icon on the video even with the paywall lmao

[–] MNByChoice@midwest.social 3 points 2 months ago

Thanks for adding the archive link!

Fucking cowards, stay and fight! The rest of the world is doomed anyway if you leave.
