If you're invading from Siberia, that's a different thing entirely!

Japan wasn't the problem. It was that ocean around it.

It's a fun joke, but the main reason the second invasion failed was because of a strong defense(and a typhoon).

The Japanese had built up defensive walls and put pylons in the river to prevent boats getting inland. And when they took over an island which they held for about a month. There were counterattacks that forced them to retreat to an island even further out. And the Japanese kept doing night-time raids on the fleet, constantly keeping them away from the mainland until typhoon season.

Long boat ride isn't a problem for the Mongols but it scares the bejesus out of the horses.

One of the reasons Mongols were successful is that Ivan I of Moscow joined them in attacking other Slavic states. Later Moscow started collecting taxes in all Slavic states for Mongols and that's the reason Moscow became the political center of Russia instead of Kiev.

When Ivan I became a ruler of Moscow, Rus had already been conquered by Mongols for 80 years.

Kiev lost its political importance long before Mongols, when Andrey Bogolyubsky of Vladimir-Suzdal captured Kiev in 1149 and just went back home instead of staying to rule there. He later led the sack of Kiev in 1169, ending the Kievan Rus period.

we're the exception!

I saw a documentary recently that claimed that one of the reasons the Mongols were so successful was that they attacked in the middle of winter. So for most people fighting in the cold was unthinkable, but for the Mongols it was Tuesday.
