Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

MODERATORS

I know there is usually a “target demographic” that is profiled for what kind of products that they may buy. I was listening to an electro swing mix online and I kept hearing ads for different kinds of soaps, and all I could think of is “damn, a lot of people must clean while listening to this.

I recall noticing back when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was on the air, that there were one hell of a lot of ads for contact lenses during that show.

I'm watching a reaction channel going through Buffy/Angel episodes now, and keep getting hard-right propaganda ads. I don't get it.

If it's anti-LGBT stuff, that may be because major ad systems e.g. Google/YouTube don't treat LGBT as a demographic but rather a topic of interest ... and the far right are interested.

Im an atheist pansexual, for a while youtube was bombarding me with Christian and Muslim ads no matter what I was watching. Un-installed the app and now I only use it on Firefox + ublock origin

All it takes is watching a few home improvement videos on YT to start the idiot ads rolling: bots reading screen text a la TikTok that boil down to "Doctors HATE this one trick!" nonsense. I'm never sure if the knowledge gained from the video is worth the brain cells lost to the ad.

Were you also cleaning? 🚿

Homework actually 😅. After a couple of hours, they all start to sound like the cantina song on Star Wars

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

That explains it. AI can't tell the difference between homework and housework.

Dropped cable and OTA TV a long time ago. Only subscribe to streaming services that have a no-ads option. So nice to not have to sit through that.

I only see ads when watching YT on my TV; and even when I go outside my normal viewing, the ads remain the same.

The only thing my viewing content has changed in terms of ads is that once I actually found some good furry stuff on YT, I started also getting ads for FurryMate.com. And those are pretty weird. Other than that it's like the same 4 products and whatever the latest movie trailers are.

Or maybe you said "soap" one day and your device heard you.
