This reads like German citizens who said they knew nothing of what was happening at concentration camps down the road from their town. Absolutely despicable. "We're a very moral community" my ass.

Bro they have a sign up that says "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS." according to this article, which is a hair raising echo of "Work makes you free" or whatever the Auschwitz sign said.

I mean, Jena is also a German town, sooooo

Dude, white small town Louisianans are mean and dumb af. I don't know how they manage to dress themselves they're so dumb. I feel so bad for my friends who live there. This tracks.

What the fuck is it this article never gets to the point

It mentions it non-stop since the start, the town is home to some company called GEO who hosts detention centres and now houses ICE detainees. It talks about how GEO has embed itself into the community, becoming the largest provider for the region and no local people protest against it.

tl;dr: This town is hosting a concentration camp.

Sounds like there's a giant detention center that they called an 'ICE black hole' where people are disappeared. Townspeople know it's bad but in small towns a job is a job.

Thank you for this I seriously couldn’t get through that article

I'm glad I wasn't alone in bailing from that meandering story.

Aye, it surprises most folks who move to the 'country' how many of the people out there are employed in the prison industry. I think where I was in a rural area (about 20 people per square mile) about 5-8% of the jobs in the entire county were because of the local prison.

[–] BarneyPiccolo 3 points 12 hours ago

Most people in the rural areas around prisons work on the local farms. Its hard, often dangerous work, and workers have to be on their toes. Those who are too stupid or lazy to do that work end up in working in the local prison, so they're recruiting from the dumbest, laziest local rejects.

The article could perhaps do a better job giving more background info on GEO Group, but the short answer is that GEO is the point. They, along with CoreCivic, are the primary entities contracting with the government to detain and hold whoever they are presently disappearing (read: providing the state side concentration camps).

They are apparently using money to encourage the locals to turn a blind eye.

Ikr? Someone's getting paid by the word. I gave up before they got to it.

[–] Yawweee877h444@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Lol agreed. Writers who enjoy writing needs a job to pay the bills and is expressing their passion maybe. Sucks for us who just want the raw news info. The author needs to go write novels or something.

It's probably Ai meant to "lure the reader"

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Oh look another AI hater screaming everything is AI.

[–] SendMePhotos@lemmy.world 0 points 6 hours ago

I don't hate Ai, however I do think it's not being used or harnessed correctly. I also believe that a lot of slop exists due to corner/expense cutting.

[–] dinren@discuss.online 3 points 13 hours ago

It really is odd.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I remember Jena 6. I remember where I worked, and obsessively scanning the news before and after work. So "moral" 🤮

[–] dinren@discuss.online 1 points 13 hours ago

Were you in Louisiana or something?
