Was curious what it would look like if China had the same incarceration rate as the US. Did the math and they'd have 70% of the world's prison population right now.

The mathUS incarceration rate is 541 per 100k people
If China had the same incarceration rate, 1419321278×0.00541=7676700 prisoners
Global prison population is 11 million
(7676700/11)*100=70%

In reality, it's at 16%; less than the US despite a 5x higher population.

1970 was during the cultural revolution. In that year, the world population was 3.68 billion, and the population if China was just shy of 830 million - China had 22% of the world's population, so if they held (only) 20% of the world's prisoners, they'd have a lower than average incarceration rate.

The same is not true for the US today, we have less than 5% of the world's population today.
