We used to have a neighborhood Jay that would mimic cats by meowing at them. Freaked me out the first time I heard it. They later lost all of their head feathers. Such a crazy bird.

What one makes a whoowhoowhoowhoo sound as it flies? Almost sounds like a deep whistle laugh and I don't think it's a loon

Might be a swan. Heard one circling a lake once at night and didn't know what the fuck I was hearing. Like a weird nasally wing sound. Like a giant bat or something.

I had a similar experience; not sure what the culprit was but I was trying to walk to my car at night while visiting grandparents deep in the woods. It was fairly dark and I only heard flapping but I could tell it was BIG by the sound and freaked me the fuck out

It got to my lizard brain and after trying to work up the courage to leave the safety of the front deck for a good ten minutes, I decided to head back in and just stay the night

That would freak me out too. Your grandparents don't live in the New Jersey pine barrens, do they?

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

No they don't

It made zero other sound other than big, slow flapping that I could hear passing back and forth

If it had made some sort of call I'd have been much more comfortable
