What is making PieFed more resilient to this type of shenanigans? Is it something to do with the backend code not being written by tankies?

The meme said "shutting down" and not "going down", so I think it's about lemm.ee's shutdown and not DDOS attacks

Well you see pie is divided into slices meaning we can cut the pie and distribute it to other instances. In addition to this pie is delicious so we wouldn’t want to shut it down, because then we’d have no pie. Based on this it has both perceived (in other words delicious) and realized resistance

Piefed has built-in community migration feature which is why many migrated there when Lemm.ee shut down.

Could be a case of not being big enough to target. I'd bet that if piefed takes off in popularity (which i'm sure will happen) some jackass will find a way to ddos or disrupt the service in some way.
