Glad they narrowed it down for us.

If they said "One Piece Flag" it would have made even less sense.

Jolly Roger, a personalized pirate flag is a jolly Roger. A generic one is the just referred to as the color of the flag, the black, the red, the green. You'd raise either version and your national flag if you're a legit privateer, otherwise you'd strike your port flag or better yet raise a false port flag.

My point is they could have just said anime because all anime is Japanese.

Which you can "Ackchyually" and end up with really interesting results.
For example, if it's the animation studio that defines it, then Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an anime, as it's by Science Saru, the same studio responsible for Dandadan, and the netflix Castlevania is a cartoon.

This is a fun topic to discuss because in Japan, if I say anime, it defaults to "Japanese animation" but probably because that's just the overwhelmingly dominant type. I don't think anyone would bat an eye if I called something like Scott Pilgrim or Powerpuff Girls an anime here. Although, you might add the country of origin as a descriptor (カナダアニメ、アメリカアニメ, 中国アニメ, etc.).

The one exception I can think of is Disney. I think we call their works Disney movies or "Disney animation (アニメーション)".

"There are some people who are participating in this trend … and haven't read One Piece from the start," he said.

Wow, anime fans really haven't changed in the last 40 years, huh

It’s a fucking pirate flag.

The Straw Hats are all about personal growth, friendship, etc and they’ll take down the world order to do it.

Indonesian government has been regressing badly lately and finally some global coverage even if its through anime memes.

We should copy this. We are all searching for the One Piece: freedom, democracy and welfare for all.

I disagree.

Like a religion, a cut-rate anime show should not be our rallying call.

This is only getting publicity because of fanboys, and we should be above exploiting their naivete for our own gains.

Compromise?

I get the reference on the one hand but I'm concerned what people who don't follow the series might think that flag means. (I can think of other sorts of imagery from One Piece that might have been a lot better to reference, honestly, like either the

flag or all of the subtle

variants that appear throughout the series.) I appreciate the article providing other examples of young adult protests that made pop culture references. Nice to hear more about the different trends among young protesters abroad.

Also, professor Suyanto's analysis:

"And I see it as effective … their voices became louder and many political elites have responded, though whether [their] response meets the public expectations is another matter."

"They don't need to take to the streets, confront authorities, or face police batons."

That’s all we got…?
