Some friends and I had been thinking about going to a Karaoke bar someday soon... I've never done Karaoke, and would basically never be able to bring myself to try. I don't drink, either, so I can't even just slosh myself into singing lol.

An artist and activist I have been working with recently said something during an event this weekend that really struck me, and that was "Embarrassment is required for transformation", and then they immediately belted out Total Eclipse Of The Heart but with the lyrics changed to relate to Horseshoe crabs through a microphone attached to a PA system on a bicycle trailer in the middle of a public park surrounded by strangers... It turned into a group sing type thing and I actually put some effort into loudly singing some of the backing lyrics, which was my first ever time singing in public...

In the shower later that night, I was ruminating over what I would actually sing at Karaoke... I love Foxy Shazam, and already know all of the lyrics, and Eric's singing style is already a little fast and loose, so I felt like I could actually do an okay job, plus some of their songs just get me so hype, it would be perfect... I even started mentally planning to take some walks this week to the end of a pier that's always abandoned with some headphones and practice just belting it out in private.

Then I looked into it, and it turns out the Karaoke place we wanted to go to doesn't have ANY of their songs... So back to the drawing board.
I would have loved to try this one.

I was jammin' to Foxy all yesterday.

I've been going to a karaoke bar every Saturday since the year started . I can't recommend it enough.

A good karaoke bar is a great time. You don't have to sing if you don't want to. And if you do sing, it doesn't matter if you suck or can't sing or stumble your words or forget some lyrics. Going up there and singing is an accomplishment in itself and no one at the bar is going to boo you or kick you off the stage. Worst thing that happens is you get no applause at the end but a good bar with a good vibe will always have people cheering you on.

Going regularly and getting up there and singing and not caring if I suck has done so much to improve my confidence and self esteem. And trust me, I suck at singing but I promise you that it doesn't matter. No one will care that you suck. If you go up to sing, just go and have fun with it.

Yeah, I really want to push myself to do it.

I have no problem making a fool of myself in most situations, but dancing, and especially singing, have always been really REALLY hard if not impossible to bring myself to do. It's hard to explain, it doesn't feel like a fear of being judged negatively, it's some other internal fear of failure against my own expectations... Or maybe it's just an internalized fear of being judged negatively that I've had for so long I rationalized it as something else to try and make myself feel better... who knows.

I have no problem moshing or screaming lyrics with the crowd at metal shows, but trying to then take that same energy to any other environment... I think it's because in the crowd at a metal show is one of the few places I feel like I truly "belong".

Metal is my favorite genre but it's not something I can do at karaoke, it's just not the vibe at the place I go to. Closest I've done to metal is Mother by Danzig lol

I'd still recommend just going there even if you don't sing and just check out the atmosphere. Not every karaoke bar is as welcoming as the one I go to. There's one bar down the street that I know does a lot of live metal music and does karaoke on Sundays but I'm unfortunately unable to go at those days.

But also to answer the post, I've been really into Testament and Otep recently. Somehow I've never listened to Testament until recently but they fucking rock!

I've been checking out Casiopea. It's fun stuff!

A year or so ago I had stumbled across the music video for Rydeen by Yellow Magic Orchestra which had a weird blip of modern popularity for an obscure song from 1979. I think people latched onto it because it's a pretty goofy video, and the song is actually really catchy. I saw it shared all over the place on Instagram, and ended up diving down that rabbit hole. At some point the digging led me to Mint Jams by Casiopea, which I immediately fell in love with. I even shelled out big bucks for the vinyl, it's such a good record to just slap on for some chill background music.

Recently revisited Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips. Still good. Themes are even more relevant these days.

I had an opportunity to see them play through that entire album live in Vermont recently (Last July) and didn't end up going... I really should have just went. It would have been a ~6 hour drive to get there, though, that was the main sticking point. I've skipped out on a couple unique concerts in the last few years and I always regret it afterwards, I should just stop doing that lol.

Dandadan’s season 2 opening soundtrack

This user-remastered version of Doom Eternal’s soundtrack. Have to do with that since the real masters by Mick Gordon don’t exist or if they do, will never see the light of day.

I have been stuck on Dysmn, a YouTube artist. They seem to be trying out (and winning) many different genres.

This album below is labeled acid jazz. Supposedly the artist is creating the music instead of generating it, but I haven't really been to their discord to find more out. I find too much soul in the music, but again I may be mistaken.

I checked their Discord, and they say they do use AI to "automate the production process", but not to "write the music" (whatever those 2 things mean), and claim to be transparent, but there's a channel called "argue with Dysmn about AI ethics" and they sure do love to be vague and argumentative and not answer questions fully lol. Take that to mean whatever, but I personally find it suspicious that I can't quickly find any videos of them playing any instruments... And also the rate that they can produce music. I follow a couple other Youtube musicians who all at least have one video showing them playing instruments... But in certain circumstances even that can come into question . It's almost a little sad that people can't just enjoy things for what they are, and also you have to question everything you see, because it's so easy to fake things now.

There's an artist I follow, Violet Cold, who has had "AI Generated" in their bio since way before AI generated music was a thing, and it's come around to be an annoyance for them. A quote:

"Are you seriously still asking if i use ai to write my music?
i put “ai-generated” in my bio way before ai music became a trendy buzzword — not because i use ai, but because no one fucking understood the artistic message: i am the ai, as part of this simulation. and if i’m part of the machine, then everything i create is, by definition, ai-generated. simple. but no, instead of using your damn brain, you'd rather ignore that violet cold has existed since 2013 and pretend all of that work somehow wasn’t mine."

[–] SpikesOtherDog@ani.social 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Hmm, thanks. That seems to taint things. I would be happier if they were more clear.

[–] Bags@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

Yeah, that's what I don't like about stuff like that, either... Like, just say exactly what you're doing. I don't have a problem with AI music, but claiming it's not something it is (if that's what's even happening here), is the problem.

It's even harder, because now that there's ambiguity, I feel like I can "hear" some of the telltale signs. I mean definitely it's got some of the warbliness I have heard in other AI generated music, but is that real, or just in my head? Will I ever know?

I'll plug my favorite (definitely not AI) artist I've discovered through Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow45zb_-ba0
