he White House has backed off plans for a full takeover of the D.C. police force and will allow for the city’s police chief to remain in charge after a judge indicated they would block the move.

President Donald Trump this week invoked emergency powers to take control of the D.C. police department and call in the National Guard to a city that he claimed is overrun by "bloodshed, bedlam and squalor"—a claim that is disputed by experts.

As part of the federal takeover, Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Drug and Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Terrance C. Cole as “Emergency Police Commissioner,” a move that would have given the White House extraordinary powers over policing.

The city’s Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit calling for an emergency restraining order to block the move, accusing the Trump Administration of implementing a “hostile takeover” of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that would lead to “imminent, irreparable harm”.

“In my nearly three decades in law enforcement, I have never seen a single government action that would cause a greater threat to law and order than this dangerous directive,” Smith wrote in the lawsuit

Judge Ana Reyes said in a Friday hearing that, according to the Home Rule Act, the Department of Justice needed to rewrite the section of the executive order that placed Cole in charge, and that he needed to go through the city’s mayor. Reyes stopped short of issuing a restraining order, but indicated that if the DOJ did not rewrite the section, she would.

“The statute [The Home Rule Act] would have no meaning at all if the president could just say ‘we’re taking over your police department,’” Reyes said.

TACO POWER. Renews in 2 weeks.

Everything Trump and Co are doing in DC and LA is just a trial run for Election Day in ‘26 and ‘28. They are 100% going to deploy armed forces to try and keep Trump/GOP in office and the country is just sleepwalking into this like voting is going to solve our problems.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

Trump and Co

TACO?

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

What are you doing differently than they are?

[–] jontree255@lemmy.world 28 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Going to protests. Talking (yelling) with my friends and family about it. Donating to orgs that help marginalized people and others targeted by these fascists. Supporting independent journalists. Taking additional precautions to protect my privacy online. Closed my Meta and Twitter accounts. Making plans in case I need to shelter in place or evacuate my home. Giving every cybertruck I see the finger to remind them they’re not welcome. Stopped shopping at vendors that kissed Trumps ring. Avoiding travel to any Red states to deprive them of the tiniest bit of income.

Every little thing you can do matters but making people aware of this bullshit and organizing locally is the most important.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 11 points 13 hours ago

To be clear, we're doing the exact same thing here. And I've seen a ton of other people doing the same. We're not all sleepwalking into this, and I don't expect our media to give an accurate representation of just how many people are.

We're not doing as bad as people think.

luckily, thanks to the “checks and balances” of our three branch government, he will surely be immediately removed from office for this blatantly illegal move.
i mean, he knew it was illegal, everyone told him it was illegal, and he tried to do it anyways until a judge stopped him.
obviously there will be legal repercussions for such an action.

Any law that is against what Trump wants is undemocratic, because Trump was democratically elected by the people!

Seriously he actually claimed that! As if every other democratic process is void, and only his election counts.
The man is insane, and unfortunately part of it is that he is a malignant narcissist. And it's only been just over ½ a year, so he is just getting started.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

and the kicker is, he wasn’t even elected.
there’s tons of evidence the election was stolen.

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 20 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

There is not a ton of evidence, there are rumors and conjecture. I say that wishing there was proof so many people didn't actually elect him.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

no, there is actually a ton of evidence.
election truth alliance has a lot of hard data, and on gross reddit, r/somethingiswrong2024 has a lot on that, but they get off topic a lot.
they have impossible statistics, they have exactly who updated the voting machines and the file name.
no rumors or conjecture, hard data….
i started looking into it to disprove it but it’s solid.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

So who is using all of this hard evidence to sue?

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

there are multiple lawsuits, but i’m not going to waste energy listing them for a sea lion.
if you actually wanted to know, go ahead:
https://old.reddit.com/r/somethingiswrong2024/

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

You can't list any because electiontruthalliance.org doesn't have any. You very easily could have just referenced that site instead of reddit.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)
[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Where are all of those lawsuits agian?

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 56 minutes ago (1 children)

repeating things stopped working in junior high, stupid and boring troll.
get a hobby

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 34 minutes ago (1 children)

List some actual lawsuits then.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 minutes ago

do you really think i care about listing things for you?
pathetic….
seriously, get a hobby, being a nuisance on the internet is possibly the saddest way someone could waste their precious life and time.
i’ve seen your comment history….
you’ve invested so much time and energy into being an asshole to everyone. Doesn’t it get boring?
what do you gain? a little flicker of power if you feel like you made someone mad?
it’s just really sad. You have all this potential to live a good life or make the world more beautiful, but you’ve settled into being such a pathetic troll….
please, think about your life… is this really the best way for you to spend it?
i’m not at all mad at you, i’m just sad for you.

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

This is false, if there was evidence it would be in court. Every licensed lawyer would be filing suit. The fact there is no suit tells you there is no actual evidence.

[–] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 14 hours ago (1 children)
[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 1 points 31 minutes ago

Regardless of the lawsuit's outcome, it won't change the results of the 2024 presidential election, which Congress has already certified.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

lol, that isn’t how a corrupt system works, but there are multiple lawsuits… sea lion

[–] Jikiya@lemmy.world 7 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

Yes every single lawyer in the US is corrupt... the level of delusion necessary to actually believe that is true is unfathomable to me.

And im not sea lining, I'm saying you're flat wrong. I'm not giving the side opposite yours the benefit of the doubt, it is the correct position.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Americans will do anything but face the fact that a majority of them actually wanted Trump to be president. It can't be true, it's a conspiracy...

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 18 hours ago

math doesn’t lie, but you do.

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 18 hours ago

“every single lawyer” as if i fucking said that….

learn math or stfu

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 18 hours ago

there are multiple lawsuits…
you absolutely refusing to look at evidence while strongly asserting that i’m “flat wrong” makes you a sea lion.
prove me wrong or stfu

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 20 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't South Korea do this to their president when pulled a similar stunt?

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 20 hours ago

yes, they did.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, certainly South Korea isn't better at this democracy stuff than the beacon on a hill, the world's melting pot, the home of the free....?

Right?..

[–] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 15 hours ago

well of course!
any day now….

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 49 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

American citizens need to wake the fuck up

[–] halferect@lemmy.world 22 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

And do what?should I just lose my job and Drive 2000 miles to DC? And then fight the most weaponized police in the world? I'm open to suggestions. I'm fully aware this is fucked so tell me what to do

[–] deaf_fish@midwest.social 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

You're not who they were talking to. You're already awake.

[–] twice_hatch@midwest.social 13 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

sure it's just frustrating when we're all strung out to see "americans need to wake the fuck up" in a thread full of woke Americans talking to other woke Americans.

I need a break 😔

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago

Add all the people from other countries chiming in as if they live in the US and yeah, it gets tiring fast.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

One suggestion: Be sure to cut back discretionary spending especially during the holiday season. The only way dumb people learn is if impacts their wallets or stock.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Right after you do, friend.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 22 points 20 hours ago

No no no... You called dibs. This is your shit now.

Don't TACO on day 5, it's usually 14 days.

[–] FiremanEdsRevenge@lemmy.world 20 points 20 hours ago

They didn't back off. They are now allowed to Federalize the DC police in case of "emergencies." Regardless when they lose, they still win.

[–] HowAbt2day@futurology.today 5 points 15 hours ago

TACOOOOOOOOOOOO!

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 14 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

He's been taking an absolute ass-whooping in polls.

38% approval rating already as of 2-days-ago, and that's by PEW Research with a sample of 3,554 people.

For comparison, Biden still had 50% aggregate approval at this point in his presidency. Biden ended 1 pt higher than Trump is now, and nearly matches Carter in terms of unpopularity.

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

He's in. He doesn't care about polls now, only how he and his cronies can manipulate the market and enrich themselves.
