Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Sehr geehrte Abgeordnete,

this is not some far off thing. if we dont do something now, we WILL have to live with constant media-checks on most platforms (including end-to-end encrypted ones).

what is CSAM?CSAM stands for child sexual abuse material. since the "but think of the children" argument doesnt work as well anymore, politicians now use CSAM as an argument for complete chat-surveillance, including your texts, images and videos

Thank you for the PSA Smorty :3

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

can we not do that please? Her Name is Maria now.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

some clients don't support display names so i'm not surprised people don't know :( voyager for example hasn't got that functionality

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Ah damn i didnt know that. It still showed me just the URL name on Thunder.

Edit: Just found that there is an option in Thunder that is turned off by default. Its under Settings > Appearance > Theming > Show User Display Names

But yeah as others have pointed out, this isnt optimal for impersonation reasons, but so far i havent had any issues with that on lemmy.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 2 points 2 days ago

the platform is still too small for it to be a problem.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

damn that sucks, those apps really should up their game.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 9 points 2 days ago

the reasoning given by the voyager dev is that it's trivial to impersonate people using display names. which... yeah, it is. if account migration was smoother it wouldn't really be a problem, but considering the audience you'd really think deadnaming was a known issue.

then again people my age were told to never use names online that can be traced back to us, maybe they assumed that would hold.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

makes sense; she is cute

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Lena, can we not do that please? Her Name is Maria now.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh, I apologize. Isn't smorty just a username though, not her real name?

[–] lime@feddit.nu 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

some clients don't show display names. the web client shows them, but some mobile ones like voyager don't.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 1 points 2 days ago

Ah, thanks. I use voyager.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well she did post a comprehensive explanation about why her Name's Maria now but as you can't change your handle (you would need to make a new one) she changed her display name to reflect it.

[–] flicker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

I support everyone being called whatever they want but I'm not on here super often so I didn't see the post about the name change and this client doesn't have display names. :(

[–] Fourth@mander.xyz 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Make people do what you say more often by assuming positive intent when it is possible.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't understand what you are trying to say.

[–] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Can we not do that please?" is usually read with a passive aggressive tone, especially when you prefix it with someone's name. Instead, something like "Hey, Maria made a post about how she prefers people not refer to her as Smorty anymore. Here's a link to it." Doing it that way carries a positive intent that once informed, someone will do the right thing. I think that aligns with Maria's whimsical and positive vibes as well.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh I see. I didn't intend it to be passive aggressive just a friendly reminder which I failed hard then. Thanks for explaining:)

[–] princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's okay! I figured it was a bit of an autism moment of using plain language but being misread. :)

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

I think I should get me diagnosed, just to get clarification.

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 3 points 2 days ago

Edited the comment, love the name btw

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 2 days ago

its sadly real ;(

politicians still seem to think we dun care bout privacy... which is sad.,.,.

[–] arudesalad@piefed.ca 12 points 2 days ago

Hell yeah! This is very important, as someone from the UK, I encourage everyone in the EU to speak out against this before you all end up like us.

Thanks for the PSA maria!

Wait how was I supposed to know
Also

GO MARIAAAAAAAAAA

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Must be a glitch or an oversight of your client, as my default Web UI and also Eternity shows her name instead of her full handle.

[–] Linearity@infosec.pub 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I see
I’m using Voyager (iOS), and am pretty sure many Lemmings use it
No wonder so many people got the name wrong

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That's super important, because its never about protecting our children, but to install authoritarian control mechanism, that doesn't help them or our police forces as they don't need more tools but more personnel (and interconnections)!

I did my part (for 79 Abgeordnete)

Thank you Maria for this important message!

[–] anothercatgirl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What stops us from using a mathematically secure open source messenger instead of whichever messenger had a software update to do with that law?

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

nothing yet.

but they do plan on somehow making it possible to encrype those messages.... or catch them before they are encrypted...

i would like to not wait for them to try to-

[–] lena@gregtech.eu 1 points 21 hours ago

they could enforce that all devices have OS-level spyware... 1984 stuff.

Feels like we need to push back against this sort of shit on the regular these days (and as a EU citizen currently living in the UK, I am getting a double whammy). It is so fucking tiring to repeatedly see such egregious and moronic decisions being made by an increasingly controlling and authoritarian ruling class.

In any case, thanks Maria for bringing attention to it. I don't know whether this is only true for me or not, but I heard about chat control a lot more the first time it was being discussed a few years ago, and I only just learned about this instance now. Unsure why, and if it is actually being talked about less or if I was somehow under a rock, but your PSA is really appreciated regardless.

[–] dontkickducks@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I never knew how to get my voice out as a civilian. Thanks for the link. I've prepared a general email, but first asked a specific representative for tips. I wonder whether I'll get a response.
