Have a look, you'll see what I mean. They seem to think the site is dead or dying.

From what I've gathered, MediaLab bought imgur years ago. A couple weeks ago MediaLab fired most of people behind imgur, because MediaLab is an AI-first company.

Since then, Imgur has recently started to have lots of outages/glitches/etc. Imgur has also started purging nsfw and political content.

The combination of the firing, problems, and content purge have upset the user base. I'm not sure what Oliver has to do with it.

Yeah MediaLab didn't buy a site they bought a dataset with a site attached to it.

Note that the nsfw purge has been happening for several years now.

My sister, who is a diehard Imgurian, has been infodumping this entire drama on me all day so I know more than I even care to.

Some big company bought the platform, immediately fired what was left of the US moderation team, and the performance of the site has also gone to shit since the takeover. Now the users are protesting by spamming John Oliver images and that gif of The Hulk and Black Widow banging.

Ahhh "The Gif". Haven't seen that one in a while lol

All imgur staff were fired. Notifications stopped working. Criticism of Medialab was met with bans. Boom.

I recall a few years ago they sold out to a for profit thing. And it has gone steadily downhill from there

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, but today in particular they turned in a piranha tank with this John Oliver centric protest (?)

A screenshot would seriously help because I have no idea what you're talking about.

I went and looked IDK whats going there and don't really care but here's a screen shot for you.

I’d heard something about it getting bought out and a lot of original staff leaving but this looks like I’d better backup all my images that I’d uploaded over the years before it goes the way of Photobucket.

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I have no idea either. Obviously a protest but they fail to actually explain themselves in the post descriptions which is not helpful .

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

I'm guessing the explanation would make it easier to automatically take down the protest content.

Lmao damn, used to browse this site like crazy in like 2015...

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

He..he..he

This will be a day long remembered.

We have seen the end of imgur.

We will soon see the end of Reddit.
