President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that China has to give the United States magnets or "we have to charge them 200% tariff or something" amid a trade dispute between the two nations.

He still doesn’t understand who pays tariffs, does he?

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 35 points 3 weeks ago

He understands what they do for him, which is to tank and rebound specific markets in a predictable way so that he and his goons can insider trade.

There was never a trade war - he doesn't give a shit about the economy. It's market manipulation.

You don't understand he always did and he benefits from it, but needs to lie about it for his "very confused" constituents to follow him? Why do you assume incompetence when the man has more than earned Hell!?

Magnets are great until you get them wet.

My uncle, AL, lost his wife to exploding magnets. After her brutal death, . he started researching the dangers of lithium ion magnets at Harvard. If you ever see your magnet expand its very dangerous. Best thing to do is put it in the oven and heat it up to 450 degrees Celsius. The heat will safely dissipate the built of magnetic energy of the magnet.

Better keep them bitches dry.

This is why Trumpie wants the magnets. Trumpie needs to know how magnets work.

The Orange TACO demonstrating why the only way to deal with America for the next 4 years is to completely ignore them and work with the rest of the world for trade. Trump doesn’t honor the trade deals that HE negotiated (Canada and Mexico, for example) and has no problem throwing out the any deal when someone whispers in his ear about some new thing. Negotiating is utterly pointless. He is the boy who cried wolf and clearly there is no wolf at all. Why should the world care if America wants Americans to spend 200% more for magnets? Or oil? Or electricity? Coffee? Cars? Groceries? Etc… etc… etc. They voted for this. Let them suffer. The rest of the world will be just fine. This is the path Canada is taking and the rest of the world needs to wake up and cooperate — without the USA.

[–] random_character_a@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

So the previous "trade deal" he boasted about was just a "concept of a deal" and now we are back in full trade war ... again.

[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

And not just the one with China. All of the trade deals so far are just some agreement, with no legal consequences whatsortever.

China produces about 3/4 of the worlds neodymium magnets and those are the strongest permanent magnets. As such they are critical components for all sorts of electrical devices.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet#Applications

China has the monopoly or practically the monopoly on many rare earth extraction and refinement, as well as a strong presence in the manufacture of components out of it. China's industrial strategy has identified critical industries for the 21st century and is building to become the global leader in all of them. China is way past the point of letting the US bully it and so they are calling Trumps bluffs.

[–] rxbudian@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize china produces most of neodymium magnets

[–] czardestructo@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

Most electric vehicle motors (or any motor, wind farms, cordless drills, etc), speakers, and medical MRI machines need them and lots of them. Kind of important and America has been asleep at the wheel on this topic for decades.

[–] Cyberflunk@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

but, what if they get wet? USELESS!

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

This sounds like a mad scientist ploy. "Hand over all your magnets or the destructobeam will vaporize your nipples". Convince me it's not.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

The US is ruled by the Insane Cunt Posse.

[–] Yareckt@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Oh no! Is someone getting mad that he is getting beaten in the capitalist game he forced everyone to play? Is he going to throw a tantrum with tanks and rockets?

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

can't you just make some magnets out of whatever

How does the madman theory work when your head honcho is an actual, bona fide madman? Don't go anywhere, we'll find out right after this quick commercial war!
