This feels like a desperation move. Like the early 2010's when every company was trying to be the next MySpace or FaceBook by integration social features.
I mean they are in a good, maybe even monopolistic position. So not sure if it is really desperate. But all of big tech has been hiring and spending absurd sums with nothing to show for the last years. 2005 to 2015 was a huge leap tech wise. But 2015 to 2025? Stagnation at best. But in most cases even worse user experiences. How can they justify the spend?

instead of a sharing id in the link that doesn't withstand secondary sharing, removing, etc, they now get who sent you the link, whether you opened a link sent to you, how long, etc. also encourages people to actually use the follow feature
instead of your friends sending you spotify links in whatever platform that you can go look up on a different music service, you have to use spotify to get their messages
I just miss the friend activity panel. that's as far as the social features should go. maybe it'll get some love with this
Lock in. They seem to worry that people are unhappy with them.
We should all be using Tidal, fuck Spotify
I'd love to switch. But all alternatives are even more American, so it feels a step backwards to go from something at least mildly European.

I switched from Spotify to Qobuz a couple months back. No regrets. Migration was easy, and the quality boost is actually noticeable. Plus, y'know, it's not Spotify.

I switched to keep the convenience of streaming but help the artists get paid more. If there is a non-American alternative that pays artists better than Spotify, I’d love to use it.
Checked it out. Not a fan. You can’t even browse their catalog until you’ve given them credit card info, but from what I can gather, their selection is pretty lacking outside of the genres they choose to focus on.
No "we" shouldn't.
I mean "we" shouldn't pay a subscription to any service whatsoever, and support our favo(u)rite artists directly (if this happened, and only 1/50 did the support, the artists would still be making more than they currently do).
But even if "we" are not of that opinion, "we" SPECIFICALLY shouldn't be using Tidal. Literally any other genuine service with a lossless tier (or lossless only) is better, unless it's "audiophile"-first, then also avoid.
I bet this idea was brought to us by the same person that was responsible for all of those messengers Google dis a few years back in sort succession.
