Technically this isn’t home improvement since it’s a summer cottage I’m fixing up for a customer. I’ve got to say though, what a fucking privilege it is to be self-employed and land jobs like this. An elderly customer with deep pockets handed me the keys to their remote cabin and basically told me to fix whatever needs fixing. No deadlines, nobody watching over my shoulder, and I’m free to come and go as I please. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’d do it without pay, but I honestly can’t think of anything I’d rather be getting paid for.

EDIT: All time top 1 post on this community - yay!

I still cannot understand why tf people put the after on the left...

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It was unintentional. I made that collage quickly and simply didn't pay attention to it. I never thought it would offend this many people.

Some people feel very strongly about things. The two things I feel strongly about are left to right before after photos, and ISO 8601 is the only date format that should be used

What the hell did you do with that beautiful fence? Looks absolutely wrecked.

The before picture looks way better, what did you even attempt to fix?

They're going for this post-apocalyptic look, says it'll be trendy in the near future.

That looks beautiful. How did you go about swapping out the rotten wood?

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Thanks.

Well, it's all held together by screws. I just remove the rotten piece and use that as a template for a new one and then painted it all to match.

You mean to tell me the new pieces are made from scratch? 😳 Good job OP

Not trying to undermine the job, but fortunately the posts are not carved, you can just cut decorative pieces to size

Yeah, pretty straightforward job. As long as things are held together with screws - preferably stainless with a Torx head - they’re easy to both assemble and take apart.

Well yeah, they’re just planks. Mostly I just cut them to length, but for some I traced the more complex silhouette onto the new piece and then cut it out with a combination of circular and reciprocating saw. Pretty straightforward job, to be honest.

For you straight forward job, for me straight to the E.R. we are not the same 😏

Idc how easy it is, I'm still impressed xD

Not trying to discredit OP's great work in the slightest, but those post caps are just two square pieces of wood stacked on top of each other and painted to match. 😆

did you spend much of the project muttering "screw you!" to yourself?

[–] asterfield@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago

I know I’m focused on the wrong thing (you did a great job!) but it is throwing my head for a loop that “after” is on the left.

[–] kSPvhmTOlwvMd7Y7E@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

nice job but why is "after" on the left? lol just to get comments complaining about it?

Seeing good work like this makes me hate vinyl even more.
