Thanks all for the berfday love yesterday (and the rave choon) :)

Sort of try to have a tradition and have an evening fire w/ every revolution, no phone, no screens, and that happened this year which was nice.

It's been such a rollercoaster this last year and you peeps have been extremely helpful moderating it for which I'm eternally grateful.

Glad you had a good night man, it sounds like it's been a pretty intense year. I hope things settle down a bit this year!

My mother, like a number of middle - older aged women, has fallen into the SheIn / Temu craze. I find it a bit ironic, seeing as she used to work in fashion and make clothes. The most useful thing she's gotten from Temu is this portable air pump for tyres.

Anyway. I came home last week, and there were two baseball bats, and a bingo set on the table. I ask too many questions, which my family hate, but I was genuinely curious as to what these items were doing in the house. My mum is not the kind of person to play bingo, or do sports. I asked my mum what the items were doing there. She deflected the question in some way.

A week later, the bats were still on the table.

Me: what are the bats on the table for?

Mother: what do you think they're for?

Me: to hit someone with if they break into the house?

Her: doesn't say no

Me: did you get them from Temu?

Her: no, SheIn

I'm convinced she wanted free delivery or had a coupon. Grrrrr.

Me: I would just let someone kill me if they break in.

Her: well I don't want to die that way. I've got one under my bed.

I'm convinced this woman is going insane. Yes, protect your safety. But keeping bats? We live in a relatively safe part of this city but there have been a few aggravated burglaries and stabbings nearby in recent times. Someone nearby had their car stolen from their garage.

I just think it's a bit too much. It would be fun to bludgeon someone who's trying to attack me though (/j). Anyone else sleep with some sort of weapon near them?

[โ€“] StudChud@aussie.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I have a baseball bat, for when I lived in a house that didn't have a secure fence lol. I still have it, I've never used it, it's brand new.

I get the idea, but leaving them on the table for that long is silly as ๐Ÿ˜‚

And the addiction to buying shit from shein and temu is just pure consumerism at its finest ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

I buy a lot of stuff online because I'm sick of being ripped off by shops here

but only stuff I'm looking for, no impulse buys

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

I just live in a safe area now and choose good friends and stay away from danger.

In Carlton I lived in a gated courtyard. The area was unsafe.

no weapon

weapons are something assailants can grab and use against me, I'm not skilled enough or brave enough to use one

if I truly need one I will use what's at hand, furniture, rocks, a bottle, anything I can grab and shove/throw in their face, balls and knees

When the junkie was living next door I had an axe handle under the bed because you never know with crack heads.

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I sleep with Mr Woof nearby, although he is more deterrent than weapon.

I don't really understand the way people shop for "discounts". I shop at places like Temu when they have what I want for the best price, and I'll use a coupon if it achieves that result. But I start with wanting to get an item and finding the best price as the priorities, some people seem to focus on spending coupons and getting discounts and whether they are getting something they actually want or getting the best actual price seems to be an afterthought.

Yes. It doesn't look like a weapon but it absolutely is. My MIL talks big on security but is bloody hopeless, likewise Mr P (example; leaving gates/windows/doors wide open and doddling off to bed ๐Ÿ˜ก). Everything is a weapon if you believe lol. Seriously, we've had a few security scares in the past and I am both ready and willing to defend my children.

Dammit, I WANT TO SLEEP IN! Stupid bladder!

It's been a tough weekend for sticking to my guns actually. Every week I finish physically tired from work, and every weekend I get sucked in (usually by Miniest but they're all guilty) to traipsing around Kmart or cafes or something that isn't resting. This weekend I've really put my foot down and said no, I need to rest, I need to save money, Miniest has a cold and I know you're bored but that's bad luck, I'm exhausted and I'm not taking a coughing child out in shitty weather to be stared at like a family of monsters.

[โ€“] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

What we do is one weekend at home and the next weekend we go out. Cold weekend it's automatically a stay in.

I just slept for nearly 12 hours and am feeling slightly jetlagged. I think I need to revise down my plans for the day, given it is half over already!

I'm mostly surprised Mr Woof and Miss Meow snoozed in too, normally they would have pushed me out of bed to make breakfast earlier. I guess they wanted a Sunday sleep-in too.

Hip hip hooray!

Yarrabyte, we were worried about you. Your curfew is now midnight. You have lost your car privileges, until you can show us that you can be safe.

I have just had to remove a dead rat from my garage. No way of knowing if it had taken a bait or not, so not to be disposed of in the compost. Into the landfill bin it goes.

[โ€“] SpinMeAround@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Anyone seen or heard from Just_Kitten lately? I know people tend to come and go and they're on a trip, but hope they're doing okay!

[โ€“] TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Still on her 3 plus weeks in WA off screen I think. I hope she'll reappear before too long. Also, has anyone heard from Tinybreak? Hasn't posted here for quite a while. Hope he's OK too.

[โ€“] Pilk@aussie.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

He's regularly posting in the other place and seems all good.

I totally botched transferring rice from the packet to the canister, so have now also vacuumed.

I've discovered that when we have wildly windy and wet weather it drives enough rain into the rangehood exhaust that I get a few drips of water come through and drip onto the stovetop. Which is nice and gunky from having run down the sides of the exhaust vent.

After a late start to the day I managed to get myself going and sort out meals for the next few days. Egg, bacon & cheese muffins for breakfasts, pumpkin soup and a vegemite scroll for lunches. I've also got some crumpets to go with jam for snacks and some fruit.

Is there any gadget or device you'd gladly buy again?

I received a free Logitech K380 loungeroom keyboard through some postage mishap with Dick Smith years ago. It's a great keyboard because it also has a trackpad built in.

I bought it again later because they updated it with Bluetooth to save on USB ports. I'd gladly buy one again now if it had USB-C charging and multi-device connectivity, but I don't think Logitech even make it anymore.

It would be great to connect one to the Steamdeck when connected to the TV for the occasional launcher screen like for Baulder's Gate 3. We tweaked some BG3 settings so we could play local coop on the deck

[โ€“] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I dropped my Sony XM3's last night, this morning they were acting up, during trouble shooting I was checking OzBargain for a new pair fully prepared to replace them on the spot if needed.

I used to know the girl who sings in that, Amiel Daemon I think. Our families were friends, she and I weren't close.

[โ€“] Eagle@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago

I loved Amiel. Would've changed teams for her. That voice!

Orange juice is made to be drank from the bottle. The mark of a good orange juice is the bottle design and how well it facilitates the drinking from the vessel.

Ew, I think one of the comments I posted about the nazi rally is being votebotted to always be at 88 upvotes.

Edit: I asked them to try get it to 1945 upvotes, a much more auspicious number.

Funnily enough, the door that links the garage to the house was wide open when we got home. The dog ran out the garage door when we opened it, but luckily, he just wanted to say hi to us and didn't bolt. My parents got the bats and checked everywhere in the house. No intruders.

Shit sleep but lots to do. Let's goo

Movie review

Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Where did they get the capes? And is this a morlock and eloi kinda deal?

Escape from Planet of the Apes. I can see how this was a good idea. What if the chimps came to our world?

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. By now the movies are nothing but trite and obvious metaphors.

I loved the first movie, great story, great design, great music. ( tho wouldn't the astronauts have noticed it is the same moon in the sky? Same size, same colour, same passage through the sky, same craters ) Just a classic anti-war movie with the primates being the voice of nature.

The later movies are statements on racism.

You know, at least the movies of the 50s and early 60s showed racism as it truly was, they didn't hide behind metaphors. I suppose it's because hippies thought they weren't racist and were beyond what their parents were like.

the first movie gets 3.5 stars ( not 4 because Heston is a bit hammy and the dialogue isn't polished )

the rest get 2
