Video Game Suggestions

2 users here now

A place to find suggestions for video games! For example, you might create a post looking for recommendations for a game to play with a friend, or a game that is easy to play if you just broke your dominant hand. Or you might post a list of games that let you use a whip as a weapon. A lot of rules for conduct here are pretty obvious (don't be a jerk, stay on-topic) so I'll bold the weird ones.

Rules

  1. Please stay on-topic: post requests for games that match some criteria you specify, lists of games with a certain element, or something otherwise relevant to helping people find games that match certain criteria.
    • If you're looking to find the name of a particular game or video game series you forgot, you should go to !TipOfMyJoystick@retrolemmy.com. This community is for fielding suggestions for games, not for finding one specific video game.
    • If you're making a post that is suggesting games, it should be a list of games. This is partially to help prevent the community from being overrun by people just suggesting their favorite game, and devs suggesting you play their latest game. This is about posts, not comments. It's okay to comment on a post asking for gaming suggestions with just one game.
  2. Don’t be a jerk. This covers bigotry and discrimination, which includes but is not limited to homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.
  3. Please don’t directly link to pirated content.
  4. When advertising something you have worked on, please use common sense for what is spammy. Self-promotion isn't totally banned: if someone asked for an RPG where you can play a lich, and the game you worked on is an RPG where you can play a lich, you can definitely answer with your RPG. I reserve the right to change this rule to be more specific about what exactly counts as spammy and what does not, but I feel I’ll know it when I see it and trust most posters to operate in good faith.
  5. Please indicate spoilers when necessary. The following format works on both Lemmy and Kbin, but if you are using an app it may not. See this comment for which apps handle spoilers. Note that spoilers in post bodies will just show the text in the preview if you link the post in, say, Discord, instead of spoiling it.
Spoilers for SomeGameSomething that happened at the end of the game! Something else that happened at the end of the game!

I have a friend who is predominantly an xbox and switch gamer whos getting his first pc and I wanna get him a kind of starter pack of steam games. Want suggestions that aren't on gamepass since he has that already.

I recommend Helldivers 2. It's an excellent game, and with crossplay he can still play with his xbox friends until they ascend to PC.

Some other fun ones right off the top of my head: Satisfactory, Hell Let Loose, Cyberpunk 2077.

If he has game pass arguably he has plenty to play that doesn't require dipping into Steam. I mean Silksong was just released after all...

JRPG wise Clair Obscur is still on game pass iirc, so the steam only now that's also on currently on discount would be Persona 5 Royal or Metaphor Re Fantazio.

The only reason I can think to play on Steam would be for Valve exclusives like Half Life series, Dota2 or CS:GO.

Very hard to say anything specific without knowing preferred genres, but in general I recommend stuff like FPS, RTS and menu heavy CRPG games... In general stuff that plays significantly better on a mouse and keyboard.

Portal is always good.

Maybe something that is better suited for PC like RTS or a city sim like Cities Skylines.

  • Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition
  • RDR2

Great recommendations but they're both better played with s controller, IMO.

titanfall 2, Age of Empires 2, Baldur's Gate 3, and Factorio

Repo, Lethal Company and Left 4 Dead 2. Kinda have to play these games with a group. Left 4 Dead 2 has all the missions of the first game.

Are some games that I enjoyed. Hopefully one of these gives you an idea.

Hard to know without knowing what he likes, but the Valve Complete Pack and/or some of their individual series packs are great, esspecially when they regularly go on sale for 90% off. The Portal and Half Life series specifically are classics. Other than that an item or two from genres that are (effectively) unique to PC might be nice, such as a copy of Age of Empires 2 or Civ V, although worth noting that Civ V can be finicky on modern versions of Windows. Gmod and/or Minecraft might also be good, esspecially for an easy way to dip into modding.

Popular, well-acclaimed games in the genres he likes is probably a good place to start. Or even just popular, well-acclaimed PC games in general. I never used GamePass so I have no idea what is on there.

I would say that it might be worth getting games that are on GamePass (making the assumption this is console-only, I have no idea) for PC anyways if they have a thriving mod community. Mods are much harder to do on console than PC, and can help you squeeze many more hours out of the same game. Skyrim, Stardew Valley, Baldur's Gate 3, and the Fallout series have tons of mods. I don't believe Minecraft is on Steam, but it is also so full of mods.

It's kind of you to do this for your friend and I wish you the best of luck!
