Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Hey bro, it sucks; they themselves are too lame for that healthy masculinity of you.

There's a pretty simple and straightforward way to make them feel and look really stupid for doing this, although it takes time and dedication: hit the gym and get fucking JACKED. Then, whenever they call you by your female dead name in public, everyone will think they're stupid.

Or get a haircut that looks like male pattern balding!

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

as someone with male pattern balding, this is physically painful to read

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well look at it like this, we're both undeniably and effortlessly masculine! Think of that next time someone calls you a feminine insult.

i don't care about being masculine i just want to pull my hairline back down like pulling a toque over my head..

YOUR HAIRLINE. GIVE IT TO ME.

Well I feel dumb. I read it as the mother being supportive to her daughter then saw the description and realized it was a mother being unsupportive of her son.

Hang in there bro, it gets better.

My ma said I couldn't be trans because I didn't care about *Checks Notes* grooming my eyebrows. Specifically because I didn't want someone else doing it for me at a salon.

[–] vithigar@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

...does she think that no man ever gets his eyebrows trimmed? It's pretty far from being a meaningful concern of mine, but it's something I've absolutely been offered (and occasionally accepted) when getting a hair cut.

I guess it's also possible I have the scenario reversed and she thinks no woman gets this done, but I feel like that doesn't line up as well with the assumed stereotypes here.

Or I guess another option is she thinks every single (insert transitioned gender) must do so.

[–] mossy_@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Right, I'm MtF, and figured I'd at least try to come out to my ma before I took my first DIY injection.

She thought I was kidding, then the stuff came in the mail and she thought I was hysterical, then we had a long conversation about it and now she thinks I'm confused. Think it'll turn out fine with more time but she did tell me that every single woman trims their eyebrows and I couldn't be trans because I hadn't been.

[–] vithigar@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

The irony of the etymology for "hysterical" in this context is not lost on me.

Because you should hear it from someone: Hey son! How was your day today? You've been looking more confident lately - it's great to see you becoming more comfortable with yourself. Hope you're doing well and taking care of yourself. Love you.

[–] olivergarden@piefed.social 7 points 5 days ago

Thank you!!! :D
