"Compact" phone - 6.3"

[–] VicksVaporBBQrub@sh.itjust.works 17 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Awe, man. It's going to totally ruin this phone case bit...

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 9 points 5 hours ago

Not going to lie that is fucking hilarious.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly, I just want a phone that fits snugly in my hand and is usable with just one hand. It doesn't even need a touch screen.

[–] Alaknar@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 hours ago

There's still a lot of "dumbphones" on the market.

my favorite phone i ever had was the gimmickiest phone i ever had. the selfie camera popped up out of the top. i don't even take selfies it just reminded me of my 80s convertible i learned to drive in what had pop up headlights.

it had great speakers and that gimmicky camera. i think i had the 7 pro

[–] nieminen@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah had that before the 11, liked the 7 more. But the cameras on the 11 are great.

Phone's still in my drawer, but the battery is shot

[–] Benaaasaaas@group.lt 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Not to be the party pooper but having a dead lithium battery in your drawer might not be the wisest thing.

[–] missfrizzle@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 hours ago

will old cellphones become UXO for gen alpha?

[–] Jimb@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

Yep, that’s the 7 pro - I had one, too. It was perfect for me because I never took selfies.

[–] levzzz@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

I loved the design of that one

[–] salacious_coaster@infosec.pub 32 points 14 hours ago

I'll take a break from my usual crippling cynicism to say that I'm still impressed that they figured out how to make decent optical zoom lenses thinner than two or three quarters and slap it onto a super computer that fits in your pocket. Smart phones really are incredible (stupid design trends aside)

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 9 points 12 hours ago

If you took the internals of a modern flagship(especially the foldables) you could rearrange it into a sub 6 inch(body, the screen would be a bit smaller even) and sub 10mm thick phone without sacrificing anything. But because companies have an obsession with making phones 5mm thick right now thats what the whole industry is doing.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 45 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

I want a larger battery and flush camera.

[–] Vupware@lemmy.zip 13 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Flush camera seems like such a boon, I don’t know why the major manufacturers insist on these abhorrent bumps.

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 12 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (2 children)

People demand that their phones take decent pictures, and that’s really difficult without focal length. Which in turn is really difficult to decrease.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 4 points 2 hours ago

So make the entire phone the same thickness and make use of the extra space

[–] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 10 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

Yes, decent, as in just ok. I want more battery. If I want amazing photos, i would buy a camera.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

I shopped around for a camera, my only requirements were pocket size (easy) and open-point-shoot quickly, like in a couple of seconds (impossible).

I double tap my volume button and take a photo in 1-2 seconds with my phone, Leika lense stuff (not obnoxiously potruding), way enough for me.

Would love a really small fast camera though, but waiting 15-20 seconds for it all to whirr together takes like the fun out of it for me.

[–] monkeyslikebananas2@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah agreed. I honestly don’t take enough pictures to care about the camera. I do occasionally play games on my phone so I get stuck with the bump because those are the ones that can play games. I too wish for larger battery.

But the reason they insist on going with the bumps is because people expect the phone to take a decent photo. They can probably make one without the bump but it is unlikely that most people would buy it (or be happy with it).

[–] laurelraven@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I mean, if the entire phone was made the same thickness as the camera bump, that would give more room for a larger battery and more powerful components, and frankly, it would still be a pretty thin phone, and easier to handle (oh, and they could put the fingerprint scanner back on the back where it's convenient and reliable)

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 hours ago

People don't want to lug a camera all over the place just in case they want a good photo, they want to be able to make a decent photo with the small brick that they always have with them anyway

And I am one of them. While I might not care too much about the highest quality pictures, I would still appreciate better ones if possible

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Check out Ulefone. They have a line of phones with 15-22Ah batteries. My phone weighs 1.4lbs. I always have streaming video playing, and I recharge every 3 days.

[–] VicksVaporBBQrub@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Quick question. Does your ruggedized phone have a transflective LCD display? I'm just now doing some quick searches and am seeing the technology only being unsed in ruggedized (non-touchscreen) laptops.

idk, i've been calling phones that look like this 'Safety Hammer'

[–] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

Not available in my country.

[–] CheesyFox@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 20 hours ago

and i hate it so fucking much

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It’s like the ultra-thin TVs that are only meaningfully thin if you bust a hole in your wall for the business end to recess into.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

And they usually suck really bad if you need to mess with the cables. No room for my pudgy fingers

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 4 points 18 hours ago

Holy hell that slayed me…

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

The Z Fold 7 in a nutshell. I love how it's so thin that it just looks and feels like a normal phone when folded (without sacrificing battery life too), but the camera bump is comically large. It wobbles like crazy when when sitting on a flat surface.
