General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Far right hate and repeated attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries including the UK. The man can spend orders of magnitude more money than the cost of an entire UK general election campaign and not even notice - that kind of influence is antithetical to a free democracy.

I've long thought twitter, by its nature, was corrosive to civil society, but unfortunately that won't be fixed by replacing it with another short-form rage-machine.

You're probably right, unfortunately!

Fuck that defeatist bullshit. "Oh, what's the point of keeping billionaires out of social media?"

Well, there have been things that were not shit, precisely because there weren't billionaire assholes fucking it up. It does happen, it's not inevitable.

Though, it makes it more likely when you spread defeatist bullshit like this.

I think you might be misunderstanding the point.

It's the idea that social media, in its current incarnation, in and of itself, conceivably CAN'T be rid of these problems. It's an emergent property and it's entirely possible there is NO way to deal with manipulation or misinformation. Even federation doesn't eliminate the problem, and it's far past time to talk about the possibility that the only way to avoid the negative impact of social media is to not have social media - at least not in ANYTHING like its current form.

“Oh, what’s the point of keeping billionaires out of social media?”

I don't understand who or what attitude this is supposed to be paraphrasing.

Now if only Twitter were owned by a brown foreign extremist. Boom! Instant ban.

Alas, this is not how the world works 😔.
