annoying nitpick

There is no progression up a ladder in evolution, not towards sophistication nor complexity.

Every single species alive on earth comes from a genetic lineage precisely as old and thus "evolved" as we do. Species can shed complexity and capabilities from evolutionary pressures just as much they can gain them.

I know this is a meme but framings subconciously slip into our ways of thinking like this very easily.

I'm going to nitpick even harder - Who says it's a ladder depicting evolution? Maybe this framing subconsciously slipped into your way of thinking? It could be a ladder depicting of how the author regards creatures in terms of moral ability or even price per pound of entity. I'll go one further, the inclusion of "God" on the ladder indicates that it's not an evolutionary ladder.

My point is about the conceptual framing of a ladder leading to a narrow frame of view about evolution, not that this particular meme is portraying itself literally as an evolutionary ladder.

Excuse me, it's called Alien^3^, and what exactly is the problem with it?

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 13 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (2 children)

Not much except that it came out after one of the greatest science fiction sequels of all time and couldn't escape the shadow of its success. Also the lack of weapons for a prison seems like it's less dungeon and more of an oubliette, which was never stated in the film but would make sense for how the prisoners are left to fend for themselves and have no regulation about mixing populations.

But I agree with you that the third one isn't bad.

My biggest issue with 3 was how the writers failed to build a good mental map for the audience of the tunnels. The whole 10 minute "chase" scene had me thoroughly confused as to how close the alien was to anyone else.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 20 hours ago

There's also a lot of context around its production and release that's only memorable to people who were fans at the time. It spent years in development with several rewrites. There was a publicly stated intent that the xenomorphs would be coming to Earth. Total mess of a production with poor setting of expectations.

Decades later, we can ignore all that and judge the film on its merits. I think it's ok, but not great.

what exactly is the problem with it?

Studio interference.

[–] stenAanden@feddit.dk 12 points 22 hours ago

I don't care what you say. No cut can make up for killing off Newt, Hicks and Bishop like that.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 17 hours ago

The dirt, the worms in the dirt, Mr. Popo's feces, and then you.

[–] elgordino@fedia.io 8 points 22 hours ago

The β€˜Legacy Cut’ a fan made 4k restoration and recut of Alien 3 is well worth a look. Much better than any of the released versions imo.

You can get it here https://www.a34k.net/

[–] TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I refuse to acknowledge its existence.

[–] stenAanden@feddit.dk 2 points 20 hours ago

Hold the wall.

Yes Alien 3 is the David Fincher one where the studio meddled. Certainly not the worst in the franchise (my vote would be Alien: Resurrection) but still pretty bad imo

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 2 points 19 hours ago

It could have been worse, the script sketch the final movie is based on was set on a wooden prison planet. Like a wooden barrel space station sort of thing.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 21 hours ago

And yet, the movie that came after was worse.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Is that prison alien or Michael Wincott alien? Both were excellent and pushed the lore a bit.

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Prison, and I don't care what it did with the lore, it was pretty miserable as a movie and the effects were unacceptably bad

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I think its space marines alien

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

That's Aliens, everyone knows that's a great movie

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 2 points 22 hours ago

Director's cut WAS a good movie, Alien Cubed is a masterpiece and MUCH better than Aliens

[–] bryophile@lemmy.zip 2 points 23 hours ago

I think this is offensive to mosses

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago

I'm happy below the plants, I think it was fine.

The first 4 with Ripley are good, the rest are strange with a bad plot.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 23 hours ago

Sorry, but Cephalopods have to be above God.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Was that the Winona Ryder one?

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 7 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

No, that's the Joss Whedon fan tribute that is "Alien Ressurection". It's not canon either.

Edit: Before anybody get any ideas, it's:

-Alien

-Aliens

-(We are here)

-Aliens's

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

I think it's arrogant to the point of hubris to put humans so close to Jah

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 1 points 21 hours ago

Higher Plants should probably go above Molluscs, but I agree with the rest.
