He was actually fired for this?

Yes*.

*he was probably actually fired because he's super critical of Trump and Trump has been trying to get him off the air for a while and all the major broadcasters are bending over for fascists.

But why are they bending the knee instead of suing the FCC for over stepping its bonds?

The parent company needs FCC approval for a pending merger, so they'll do anything to stay on their good side:

Nexstar Media Group is in the middle of a $6.2 billion merger with media company Tegna. Nexstar, which owns or partners with more than 200 television stations, would acquire about 65 more under the deal. The two companies entered into a definitive agreement for the merger last month, but it remains subject to regulatory approval from the FCC, currently chaired by Brendan Carr.

I think the angle they are going to take is "Misinformation about the shooters political leaning."

Right now the admin is pushing hard on the narrative that the shooter was a "leftist". This narrative serves as a great distraction for their cult and justification for any future violence they plan to enact on left leaning groups (Antifa).

If misinformation was enough to get you pulled Fox News should have been pulled ages ago.
