35k is a lot.
Peak Iraq was 170k.
So, the US is at 25% of the deployment in Iraq .

Approximately 150,000 US soldiers were deployed in 2003. This number increased to its peak in 2007 of over 170,000 soldiers, three years after Bush claimed ‘Mission Accomplished’ in Iraq on 1 May 2003.

So there are 17,500 American soldiers actively 'deployed' in the US?

"Careful there, friend... Didn't you get the message what happens to comedians around here? Or do we need to take out John Oliver next to teach you a lesson about what happens when you joke about 'Murica?"

Of course not, it is 35,000 soldiers but they are all standing on one leg.

Don't be ridiculous! They're all standing on two feet, but are each wearing a shoe rather than a boot on one foot.

Title is worded in a way that suggests it’s unusual for the army to be deployed within own country borders.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 days ago

It is. You're not deployed when you're at home, unless there's someone actively invading your borders.

[–] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 days ago

Stationed, or based, is not deployed.

You deploy to missions e.g. combat.

That's HIGHLY unusual. Most countries have laws against that, or very specific groups that can only be deployed in their own country.
