Very telling that the linked article doesn't even go into details as to what Omar said that is so bad

Mace has said Omar, an immigrant who criticized Kirk’s views of gun ownership and race relations in the aftermath of George Floyd’s 2020 death in Minneapolis, should be deported to Somalia. Omar was born in Somalia and became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

This goes into more detail:

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5508855-mace-omar-censure-resolution-kirk/

But the text of Mace’s resolution did not quote any of Omar’s own words. Instead, it quoted extensively from a video that Omar re-posted on social media.

That video said Kirk “took complex socioeconomic issues and simplified them by pointing fingers at out-groups, demonizing those groups, and siccing his massive following on them,” calling him a “stochastic terrorist” and an “adamant transphobe.” It adds that Kirk, whose suspected killer has been described as left-wing by government officials, “was Dr. Frankenstein and his monster shot him through the neck.”

So, all Omar did was link to a video that was critical of Saint Charlie the Loquacious.

It is fitting that the only thing that forced the vote to fail in the House was a promise to censure a Republican who looks like he deserves it a lot more:

Indeed, Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) appeared to respond to Mace’s move by bringing a resolution to censure Mills over allegations of domestic violence, threatening to release nude videos of an ex-girlfriend, and making false financial disclosures. A similar censure of Mills, who has denied those allegations, was abandoned after Republicans similarly voted to table a resolution to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.), who faces charges resulting from a clash with officials at an immigrant detention center.

Our entire government is made up of criminals all agreeing to let each other get away with it as long as they can all keep stealing/raping/abusing. Truly wild that this is all just public info and they still are in power.

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Our entire government includes Ilhan Omar, the aggrieved party in this case, Bernie Sanders, AOC... How did you read that and arrive at that conclusion?

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think because they seem largely powerless within their own party against the likes of Shumer, Pelosi, ect.

They also don't have the "take my ball and go home" card Sinnema and Manchin have

Plus all those Dems are in the way of the fascist agenda. Let's get rid of all of them.

Bernie can stay. Just Bernie. That will be his curse.

Because a dozen "goodies" among hundreds of "baddies" is inconsequential?

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Quoting what someone said and trying to inspect an immigrant detention facility are totally the same as sexual assault and revenge porn. /s

For fuck's sake, give the "both sides" nonsense a rest.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I don't mean to say both sides are the same. Just the whole mechanism of government by which members of government can just IGNORE ACTUAL CRIMES for any reason they deem convenient.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Yep. #bothSides. No need for nuance or choosing for harm reduction. Stein/Putin 2028!
