What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

From the article:

A software update rolling out to Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators in the US is putting ads on the fridges for the first time. The “promotions and curated advertisements” are coming despite Samsung insisting to The Verge in April that it had “no plans” to do so

Samsung is calling it a pilot program for now, which — I kid you not — is meant to “strengthen the value” of owning a Samsung smart fridge

Please open your fridge and drink a verification can from one of our sponsors.

I currently stand 5-10feet back from the gas pump that trys to force me to listen to garbage ads... never will I buy a fridge that has a tv

I never return to those stations and I leave a review so others know theyll be forced ads

Never have I wanted to sabotage something so badly...

I refuse to listen to anything companies tell me. I consider them all liars, frauds and thieves.

Am I the only one that has their ears hurt by the excessive volume of the ads? I can't go back because they hurt. It's abnoxious.

I do the same, but I just pull about 5-10 feet past the pump so it's not even in my line of site.

I guess someone could be excused before. But anyone who buys one of these disasters from this point forward gets what they deserve. Maybe when it breaks in 6 months they’ll switch to a different brand with no screens.

We’re planning on replacing most of our appliances in 2026. Samsung won’t be any of them. And I definitely won’t get anything with a screen.

A hammer will fix this problem

A not very epic poem about smart appliance FOMO, to be sung to a tune played on the world's smallest violin

I'm devastated my fridge is old and does nothing
but keep my food cold.
I feel so poor and left out,
having no access to these value-strengthening promotions and curated advertisements.
My dumb fridge just
stands in a corner of the kitchen, not talking to me!
I feel so alone among my silent appliances.
Please speak to me washing machine
say something sweet space heater
profess your undying love to me dish washer

Sounds like that plot line in the TV show Silicon Valley

Fuck this dystopian timeline. And we’re trapped. Too late to avoid this period of human suffering and too early to leave and colonise another planet.
